Best way to get into a 135i(?s); 3 options!
Appreciative of any advice towards my dilemma here. I'm hellbent on getting into a 135i, and doing so relatively quickly (at least before the 2 debuts).
Considering 3 options -- ED on a new 135i, US purchase of a 135is, or a used N54 135i, latter of which is the following: '09 135i 35K miles, 6MT, M sport (only package that interests me) for $24k (1 more year of CPO). All 3 are plausible financially, but the 135is is pushing it a bit. I'm leaning towards the Euro Delivery on a 135i given the low invoice on my config (35750), access to an Incentive pricing, and the fact that I'll likely be in Europe this summer anyways (after taxes I anticipate 38,775, not including a ticket to Munich, but again; likely will be going anyways). Anyone think the used option would still be better in terms of cost over the next 4 years? Added appeal of this option is I would have no fear of modding with no risk of losing 4 years warranty. Or that the 135is is simply worth the premium, no matter the deal. Sorry for the novel. Thanks for any insight! |

If i had the funds available and had to choose between the 3, i would likely go with the 135is. I really like everything that they did with it, including the limited interior stitching, PPK and PE stock as well as the wheels which i likely would not want to replace with aftermarket (but i would ditch the RFTs...). A lot of people are saying that its likely the last of its kind in the price range from BMW, but if you can be really patient, prices on them lightly used will likely drop moderately once the 2 series is available.

135is or CPO 135i (if saving money is a big deal for you) for sure. What do you mean the last of its kind in the price range from BMW b1aze?

Are they offering the updated M Sport Edition in the US, or is this a Canadian only thing? Basically all the interior and exterior bits of the 135is, just missing the PPK and PE, and you can add those later if you wish. Nice that it can be ordered ED this way.

Thanks for the feedback guys, tough choice. To further clarify, I'm looking at a $4,750 difference before tax between the ED 135i and 135is, the latter being at 1200 under invoice including incentives.

I just bought an 09 135 vert. M sport, leather, CPOed. Love everything about it including the fact that someone else paid depreciation. |

I don't drive an iS, so maybe my opinion is skewed, but some things to consider:
Driving your 135i in Germany, and just hanging out in Europe will be an unforgettable experience. I highly doubt a louder exhaust and different wheels will compensate for the amazing life experience of traveling. The used 135i is also nice because, the original owner obviously takes the initial depreciation hit. Although, car can be expensive to repair, so only 1 year of warranty could be a bit riskier compared to a new car. You are getting close to probably needing brakes, 40k inspection, spark plugs, flush etc. Which can add up quickly. It still will be cheaper than the others obviously, and the modding piece of mind is cool (although addicting, and doesn't really make practical sense). If you are convinced that you will only use BMW parts and need to keep your factory warranty, the the is is a nice option. Although, aside from some of the exclusive interior and trim, you could easily add the other options on at another time (unless you are in love with the trims and options). More importantly if you drive the car and feel that power is ok, but handling is off you could add performance suspension instead, or modify what you feel is lacking to you. Not to mention for the 4750 difference in price you could do 90% of the BMW Performance parts, or other parts of your choosing to the car. Last thing to consider is that you will likely drive the car for years to come, and saving a little bit of money now will likely be spent and forgotten quickly, but that one option (or many options) you didn't get to save a buck now, can become annoying. So the real answer is follow your heart. If it says go to europe and have fun and get a 135i, do that. If you love the is, get that. If it were me, and I could do it again, I would do ED. Tim

That doesn't make sense with CPO. You should have 2 years/100k after the 4 year car warranty is up. I think another option would be to get a 2011 cpo for 30ish, get that good warranty on it and just add PE yourself. In that case, you get the dep hit advantage and you get a good warranty out of it. It could save you 12k$.

Depending on the mileage and condition of the '09, it sounds like a pretty good deal. A 135 with the N54, 6MT, and M-sport package is definitely desirable. If you decide a new car is the route to go, absolutely do via European Delivery. It is an unforgettable experience, and the fact you can take your own new car with you on vacation through Europe is and awesome bonus.

Just for thread closure here -- decided to go with the ED 135i and got my order in today. Almost a $5,000 difference up to the "is" (given I'll be in Germany this summer anyways), and the huge support for the ED experience pushed me over the edge.
Thanks again for the feedback, made a huge difference as a first-time BMW buyer. |
