And suddenly it might be time to say goodbye
It hit me yesterday... I'm about to pick up my M2 (on Friday) and BMW has not let me out of my lease early on my 650GC. Three cars would be bad - but the wife also has two and we have a two car garage...
Thinking it through... while my 1M has only 4,500 miles (I put a whopping 4,300 miles on it in 4.5 years), it really just sits in the garage. If I take it out twice a month, I'm doing well. I enjoy driving it, but I'm always looking in the rear view mirror to see if someone is going to take out my unique, irreplaceable car. So I'm a stress case. Rationalizing keeping it to my brother (it is appreciating or at least not depreciating), he pointed out insurance, maintenance, repairs, and the garage I just rented for the winter and asked if it was appreciating more than what I was spending on it. Alas, no way. A trade on the M2 is basically a wash - no money out of pocket (and I save the $4K in taxes.) So, do I let the garage queen go to a better home? Is there a "fair" price for a loaded 1M with 4,500 miles in perfect condition?

Sell the 1M. It's not yet an investment car and will not be appreciating as such for quite a long time (years). Right now with such low mileage it is likely to fall between $60k-$70k depending on the buyer. Unfortunately there is a guy locally to me who has been trying to sell his black 1M with 30k miles on it for $50,000 for half a year now with no bites. Black is not the most ideal color for the car, but your extremely low mileage would definitely interest a collector who has the money to pay you in cash and also has proper storage for the car.
The fact that you have a car you don't drive with basically no real storage considering your garage size and additional vehicles, tells me that unless the car is appreciating in value significantly, it's not a good idea to keep it. That pains me to say because I've owned two 135i cars and I would love a true 1-series M. I feel your paranoia on driving it, too. Part of the reason I quit my downtown job and started working from home - now I just drive on backroads for fun cruising where there isn't heavy traffic and I never worry about some idiot texting and rear ending me during rush hour or something stupid. Enjoy the M2.

I just drove my 1M 4k miles across the US and loved every minute of it. The car was built to be driven, and it's a damn fun car to drive, not to mention maintenance hasn't been terrible at all. I doubt you'll have any trouble selling considering your mileage, plenty would love to own it. Makes sense to sell considering your situation, just unfortunate that it's likely the most engaging and exciting bimmer in your garage.

You should forget the M2, stop worrying and drive the 1M.

Buy the M2 and sell it right away for a profit (if you're getting it for MSRP) and keep the 1M. Read Chris Harris' tweets from last month on 1M vs. M2!

Drive it or sell it. That car deserves to be driven and enjoyed. Good luck in your decision.

Oh If only you had a white 1M! I have a black 1M and bought it with 5000 miles on it two years ago for 57k. It sat for some time( 5 months) before I stumbled on it locally and grabbed it after a test drive. It was mint. I think they are worth that (57-62K) with 4k miles mint and not modded (and the right buyer). 60-70 seems to be the asking but I'm not sure how many actually trade within that range. Seems like all the frenzy with houses and cars is dying off a bit and downward pressure on luxury is starting to creep in nationally.
I'm looking for a mint white one now and it's hard to find them unmolested and owned by someone as picky as I am. Like Nachob said, I want a 1M I can drive and not be paranoid about! That means I need two! |

If you are not driving the 1M enough why would you get an M2?
Are you going to drive the M2 more because it is less unique? If so just drive the 1M as if you would drive the M2. The 1M looks more attractive than the M2 if you compared them side by side in real life and the driving experience is more visceral and physical. |

The 1m and m2 are both terrific cars. Some of which for different reasons. We can go on and on about the pros and cons to each but I think it is worth considering the financial component. Your brother in law brings up some good points about the expense of owning a 1m but what about the m2. Right now the m2 is selling for a premium. As more role off the production line, even assuming they don't make a csl, the car will depreciate and somewhat rapidly. In all likelihood you will lose more money on a new m2 then driving a 1m in the next two years.
Drive the 1m. Enjoy it. Few ever will in this hemisphere. Then in two years see what a new m2 vs a used m2 is going for and then decide. Ultimately you will be better off financially doing this and can make more of an educated decision based upon your circumstances and how well the m2 is depreciating , holding up ( I've worked plenty on the n55) etc. For all you know by then the b58 (awesome engine) takes the place of the n55 and your m2 depreciates further. My daily driver is a f80. My once a week cruise is with the 1m. It's just special in so many ways. The dealer called me two months ago to trade outright the 1m for the m2. I told him "wasn't going to happen". Obviously I'm bias but not necessarily wrong. Good luck in your decision. |

Quick update
Dealer did not see the value in the 1M and low balled me (to be fair, with the air bag recall, they can't even sell it until they get it fixed) - still, $52K was a bit insulting.
So the 1M stays. I have the cover now and the garage space - so it will go into storage for the rest of the year. I'll figure out the rest later and/or put it on the market.

They cannot sell the car with the airbag recall? That's hilarious. I see TONS of cars listed that are impacted by the airbag recall. BMW has until like 2020 to get it cleared up....

If you can swing it and can legitimately make the space for it in your garage, then definitely keep it and I'll retract my previous statements. But you need to drive it if you are gonna keep it !! Like others have said here.
Dealer = lol

Update #3
So last night, I get a call from the dealer and he says "The guy down the street will give you $59K for your car - no sales tax credit of course, but he wants your car." Told him I wanted $62,500 for the car - got home and prayed that he did not take me up on it. He didn't.
So I need to change my signature now - cause my M2 is now being made in November since (get this as a turn of events), the guy who was going to buy my 1M ended up swapping spots with me and took my M2 home today.
