Gas Cap

When you tighten the gas cap, do you only have to turn it a little and it tightens, and only click once?

This is my first car that is not Japanese. My previous cars, you will have to turn a while for it to tighten and than clicks a few times.

Yes, that appears to be the case. I tripped out on that too, but it seems to be the way it works.

One click, about 1/4 turn. That's it.

Guess again.

My suggestion, if you only go to 1 click, is to always keep the gas cap in the back of your mind if your Check Engine light ever comes on. The light freqently has appeared on my E46 because a sensor in the gas tank showed that the seal wasn't good enough; I can only imagine this will happen on E90 as well. So it was the dealer's recommendation to go beyond 1 click, and it solved the problem.

Let us know after you've had your car for five months and have filled your tank 22 times. This cap does not wratchet like most do. It will only go about 1/4 turn and that's it. Incredible as it may seem, they have also changed some other things with the E90. Don't come off all high and mighty with this "guess again" crap when you don't even have your car yet.

I also only turn my cap about 1/4 turn and to one click. It doesn't need more. I think it even says in the manual that it needs a short turn and the click is confirmation that it is securly closed. I've never had a problem in either of my 2 E46's or my E90's (and thinking of it, no one in my all BMW driving family has either)

ledzep, I've noticed you've got something to say about most of my comments. With the gas cap, the truth is the truth. Mine goes 1 click too, but it is possible to go more.

The real problem is, you are a know it all dork.

So, let me guess, you have an e46 and you're still waiting for the e90. Seems like you have a very vivid imagination with your answer...

From my experience with my previous e46 and current e90, both gas caps only click once after a 1/4 further turn. But what I do to prevent the check engine light from coming on is to turn it again 2 more times against the resistance point to make it click 2 more times.

I hadn't noticed, but thanks for keeping track. Apparently you must make a lot of foolish statements then.

the gas cap clicks is to make sure is tighten. The EVAP emission systems checks for any leaks in the system when it founds that the gas cap isnt tighten, the check engine will come on. but if after the gas cap tightens, three trips will turn the light off.

My sales rep explicitliy reminds me to always hear two click sounds from the cap first. He said the engine reminder light will come on otherwise and BMW will charge $150 for clicking the gas cap twice for you (while they charge nothing for maintenance )
