Center cupholders torn, plastic covering tearing off
It looks as a layer of plastic slowly deteriorating on where my center cupholders located. How can I fix this issue, can it be replace through warrenty, or would can I fix it myself. Also, has anyone else experience this before? This shouldn't be happening on a $35000 car only 2 years old.

Many BMW models have problems with the finish pealing, I see it most often on the steering wheel. Dealer will replace it.

I just found this weekend that the same thing is happening on my steering wheel plastic. It is at the 3 and 9 o’clock position at the edge by the leather. I thought it may be due to my wife’s hand lotion. I thought it was some protective coating that was never remove but quickly found it is the finish. I am sure the dealer will warranty it.

Haha don't you love the quality of the Iphone camera! I do not use my cup holders too often, when I do, usually a coffee cup similar to those they give out at Dunkin Donuts. Maybe the cleaning material I use for interior may have sped up the degradation process on the plastic? I use Mother's California Gold leather cleaner for my seats, I always wipe the center to get any dust off. Going to the dealer soon, will let tell them to replace it.

Hate to say it but that seems alot more than just natural plastic degradation to me..how long have you had the car??
I would expect something like that on a car with maybe 80k+ miles on it with LOTS of cupholder abuse, otherwise that just doesnt seem right. |

My passenger cupholder broke last week. I went to the dealer and they just gave me a new one. Might be worth a try because my rep did say it was covered under warranty.

I cant stand that rubberized paint. Is it really supposed to make idiots feel like their cars are higher quality?
Ive seen variants of this in our 94 toyota previa and our 04 saab 9-3. Both in various stages of peeling. How annoying. |

It can't hurt to ask the dealer. It's possible you just got a component that had didn't take the finish properly at the factory.

Dealer'll fix that up for you. I have a buddy with an 08 that did this exact same thing. They just snapped some new pieces of trim in for him, no hassle.

Don't know what caused this besides possiblity of cleaning products. I rarely use my cupholders. I try not to eat or drink in my car, very picky about keeping the interior clean. Also noticed the rubber starting to peel off on my tuning knob on the radio! Not happy about this either, will be going to dealership shortly. My car was one of the many which were recalled for rear tail light malfunction. I have a tint on my tail lights so instead of replacing them with untinted ones, they shipped a pair of tinted tail lights from Germany, when they arrive I'll be going.
