Don't bring your 1er here!
Recently took a little side-trip to hell: Bodie, California.
After a butt-numbing ride on a 10-mile dirt/gravel road - we arrived. Had a great time exploring the old gold-mine ghost town and decided to leave via an alternate out that was suppose to be much better. It wasn't the shorter 3-mile dirt/gravel road that was the problem, it was the HUGE pot-hole in the paved road that ate my run-flat. We managed to limp to the nearest town - twenty+ miles away. Had to wait nearly six hours for a tow truck that could tow the car to the nearest BMW in Reno, Nevada more than 100 miles away. Conclusions: Bodie is worth the visiting - in a 4WD with real tires and a spare. Don't forget to have plenty of gas and lots of drinking water. Leave your 1er at home. My original plan was to drive Tioga pass to Yosemite in the 1er with the top down. We still did the same drive, but in a rental car while the 1er was getting new tires. |

I've been wanting to check out a ghost town for a while. I might have to do this! Thanks for the idea. And yes, I will definitely bring the Grand Cherokee instead. That is one dirty 1er!

When we got to Bodie, there were about 40 cars, 2/3ds were SUV's, but there were plenty of non-SUVs including a couple of Mustangs and a few Toyota's. I think if I'd had non-run-flats, my 1er would have made the round trip with no miss-hap. |
