In the 135i, I wouldn't go with would though. It's just me, but I don't associate wood with a sports car very well (even if it is in a Maseratti, which has among the best wood trims). Piano black would be good, heck maybe even dark CF (though it may look tacky), and brished aluminum works too.
The X3 Terracotta was a pumpkin color (more orangey than brown), and very different from 1 series color (more close to American football brown).

For some reason, on the 3 series it is named Terra for all global markets, but for the 1 series, it is named Terracotta in North America, and Terra for the rest of the world.

I had a 2006 e90 with Terra at the same time as I had my 135i with "terracotta", and it is the same color (and absolutely nothing like the X3's Terracotta).

I have it in mine, and just like the others said, it is regularly complimented.

Mine was not custom ordered, it was sitting right out in the showroom. I had no idea about it, but once I saw the car, it clicked.

Cool didn't realize the same designation was used for the 2 leathers (X3 and 1-series), yet the color was different. Indeed, it was a little bit on the orange side, still looked good on the X3 with the door panels and all (outside was metallic black). Ended up keeping the car for only a few weeks anyhow, shipped it to Euro land and pocketed on some nice arbitrage (both in terms of currency, but also the US got the first few month's of production, so buyer paid premium to have it as the first in his country, as even the most stripped US X3 is considered having many options from a European's perspective [e.g. roof rails, BMW Professional radio, alarm, various other things I can't remember right now])

I wish we could get saddle brown, lokos good in other BMWs I have seen.

I just picked up my Alpine White 128i with Terracotta interior on Friday. I absolutely love it! I almost changed my order early on because I saw some pictures on various forums with the color not really looking true to life. Having not seen it in person at the time of order, this scared me. I am so glad I stuck with it. I know it's been said a few times in this thread, but make sure you see it in person. It looks much better!

Just for clarification- the 135 isnt a sports car.
As to interior choices, To each his own.

Is there a formal definition?

It would be accurate to say the 135i is not a pure sports car. It has other attributes (eg. back seats) along with having some sport car characteristics.

Well, a sports car is a sports car regardless what you are moving out of. I actually had the X3 for 3 weeks (simply needed the DMV paperwork to arrive so I can export her). Moved into the 135i having both an E39 M5 and an RS4, the latter I still keep. So my definition of a sports car is fairly loose. I tend to think the best of ///M Division and Quattro GmbH makes any such offering a sports car, but again, depends on one's subjective definition. Some might argue a 4 door sedan can never be a sports car (yet for their time each of these would have spanked anything short of an exotic).

If you ask BMW, they can argue even the X3 is a Sports 'car' as they call it an SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle).

Technically, a soccer mom can say her Siena is a sports car cause she hauls her daughters to a sporting event

A U.S. Supreme Court Justice wisely once said about Pornography. "Its hard to define, but I know it when I see it"

The same holds true for Sports Car definitions. I think most "real car" people would not place the 135 in the category of a true Sports Car. What say you?
