Focus RS and 135i are similar - both similarly priced over here, both have 300bhp.
Focus is more driver 'focused' and more WRC. I came very close to replacing my last 135i Coupe with one, but couldn't get a test drive and I was unsure of the interior which isn't the best quality. On the road, the Focus is likely to be more fun on the twisties, but off the line the 135 will always be better with RWD. Similar pace all round though once moving. Great car though, the RS500 is even better!

The focus is a hopped up budget car, like most other rally based vehicles. If that's what your buddy likes, then that's what he should get. Really turned me off when they dropped AWD though. Instead of keeping AWD, Ford went the cheap route and built a slightly higherend Mazdaspeed3 with a different drivetrain and decided to price it ridiculously higher.

The torque steer on the RS is pretty bad. All the comparos I have read in the foreign press have the Focus RS versus the Megane, Scirroco R, etc., but never seen one against the 135i. FWIW, all the paper tests (0-100km, 1/4 mile, stopping distance, grip, lateral Gs, etc.) point to worse numbers for the RS to the 135i.
Now go test it with your friend and let us know what you think.

um.... the answer is obvious..... 135i, light weight wheels and sticky tires, the BMW performance suspension (or coilovers), and a JB3. For some pretty simple mods, you can have a killer 135i. not much improvement left in the evo X or RS.

The one thing about the 135 is you can go to a business meeting and not look like a dingbat as you would in an evo, sti, rs, etc.
Understated performance. As others have said, a few simple mods and you have one hell of a car. The only drawback is it has us spoiled for what we will buy to replace it. |
