I kinda sorta feel like a dingbat when arriving at an important meeting in my blacked out 135 with performance exhaust if the bigwigs happen to be in the parking lot.

This is not intended to sound snob but when you put the 2 cars side by side you will happy and grateful that your car is the 1. Even if the Focus RS was better in every performance aspect, which it isn't, the BMW is better-made in quality, fit and finish. Everything about it is superior. Just my 5 cents.

Car size and hp are not enough to put a car on the same weight. BMW is luxury maker, although it is hard to name 135 as luxury car. I guess Ford has Lincoln division for luxury cars. Unfortunately no Lincoln is available in 1 size. Volvo is also Ford, however ti is lacking in hp. I would compare 1 to Mustang since both are convertible and have 300hp. Mustang also has many luxury features as navigation, voice command and so on.

The Focus RS500... and there are already a lot of 400bhp RS's... although I do fall into the same camp that thinks that this is too many horses for an FWD car.

For the reference, Fords that are sold in Europe are NOTHING like the Fords that are sold here in the States. They are better built, more refined...simply better than the crap that comes here. Not every model but definitely some like the Focus line. The RS is an extremely popular car in the UK and I saw many more of them that high performance 1 Series. Most one Series I saw were the hatches with small engines..saw tons of those.
Also saw tons of Focus' and many RS's which are absolutely wild.

I also prefer the 1 Series to even the Euro Focuses but that doesn't make the Focus a pile of crap.

Good point.

Ford Focus are similarly priced to the 1 series e.g. Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI is only a little less than a 118d.

But, the 1 series is still superior - better quality inside and out.

In the UK we are hot hatch mad, so the Focus RS and it's little brother the ST (2.5 litre with 222hp) sell really well.

A 3 door Focus Zetec S 2.0 TDCI starts at 16,995 and the 3 door 118d ES starts at 19,940, that's hardly a little less. Step up to a 120d M-Sport and you could probably buy the Focus and a Ka for the same price as the 1.

While the NA and Euro focus's are different cars, they're still marketed at the same compact car segment and in all honesty, the build qualities aren't that much different. Really, would you compare a Mazda 3 to the 1? It and MK 2 euro focus use the same platform and I'd say the Mazda has better build quality.

In the US hot hatches are... well, hot here too. Only problem is most manufacturers don't think so and won't bother selling them here (like the RS pictured above for instance). The kids here have get them from the Japanese manufacturers.

I wouldn't call them "hot" in the US, both BMW and Mercedes have previously had failures with hatches meant to lure younger buyers to the brand (318ti, original Z4 coupe, and C230 coupe). The hatchbacks that have done well here have tended to look a lot more like coupes (Audi TT, VW Corrado) or have been more bargain-oriented (VW Rabbit).

Back to the Focus / 135i debate. I'm close to 40 and I just sold my Evo 9. I had bought the Evo when I was 35 and felt a little old for it at the time, but lately I started to feel a bit silly in the car. I think I would feel the same in a Focus RS - even if it doesn't have a ridiculously tall wing.

I'm 25 and I agree with you. Refinment is sooo nice to have. My buddy has a 2008 STi and I couldn't imagine drive lond distances with the exhaust noise even with the windows up.
