I can barely see the damned speedo

Keep in mind, this video is of:

1. A completely different car (3 series, not 1 series)
and
2. JB3 equipped, not stock...

Not exactly pertinent to a discussion for 135s.

Why not? The 335 and 135 have exactly the same powertrain, auto trans, and gearing.

I think this issue has been pretty well settled by the hardcore drag racers who have experimented both ways. If memory serves the best results come by launching stock cars in 1st and tuned cars in 2nd.

Yes as it would make more sense with the added power.

Why didn't BMW let you program your car to start in first or second gear?

When I first bought my car it would start off in 2nd gear. Though, now almost a few months later I have been paying close attention when stopped at a light and noticed that it now starts of in 1st. I confirmed this by shifting into 2nd gear with the lever and would feel the car putting the transmission from 1st to second gear. I believe it depends on how your driving characteristics are as these transmissions are meant to adapt to the driver of the car giving each car a unique shift pattern.

I can see your just tuning into the world of the N5X. That's fine but both cars are believed to have both the same motor and indeed the same transmission. I can verify this seeing as I owned a 335i prior to my 1. In short it most definitely is in conjunction to what is being discussed. You see we all didn't have DCT back in the day so the steptronic was our version of the new and imporoved DCT system that they have today. The steptronic may have a traditional TC but the shifts aren't that much slower than that of the DCT system.

I have not driven the 2011 DCT yet but have driven the VW DCT a few times...To me it did not feel any faster shifting...but i am sure the DCT in the BMW is a tad quicker.... any specs on both transmissions to compare but i bet not by much especially when going WOT and shifting between 4-6000 rpms....

On the track, I launch the car in 1st, brake boost to 2600 rpms then feather the gas if on street tires or mash the gas if on drag radials.

On the street, I must admit, I baby it around a lot on D. This step trans is just incredible. I love it.

lol in drive it will ALWAYS start in second gear, when you put it in DS iti'll start in 1st gear but will NEVER go in 6th gear unless you're going that fast to max out 5th gear.
and Also when you put it in manual it still starts in second gear unless you do the following. Put the car in DS, and then Push the lever towards the dash then it'll start in 1st. Pull towards the center console it'll start in second!!!
nothing is changing in your car , just your habits.

I meant while in DS it will downshift to first at a light. I can obviously tell due to the engine note and the short gear ratio. Idk mayb my car is playing mind games on me? Lol wouldnt be the first time.

If Im driving, say in 5th or 6th in auto and switch it over to sport it will usually upshift a gear, either way, im pretty fast with sport shifts, im used to the dsg I had in my gti which is similar to this tranny-wise. But I find you get the fastest shifts with the best power if you pedal it a lil extra as your upshifting. The dsg has the same issue where if youre driving and dont apply any extra acceleration while shifting it will actually pause power for a second or two while shifting, I think this is just how the tiptronic/dsg trannies work, u just gotta get on it a lil bit more when shifting n ull find your blowing thru the gears fast and ..fast

P.S. To the dood above, I dont think it has it in 1st when u click it over to sport at a stop. Ive done this before, stopped, put it in sport and drove off and it feels like its still in second. Either way, its much easier to control if when you come to a stop just click the shifter over and upshift it so its set to M1 and ur good to go.

The steptronic will never start in 1st gear in any mode.
In standard D, SD or M the car will always start in 2nd gear by default.
The only way to start in 1st gear is to manually change it using the gear lever or the paddle shifters.

I'm surprised some of you can't tell the difference between 1st and 2nd gear.

This thread is why automatics are much more common for most drivers.

Lol serious? The majority of 135i owners I see all have 6mt. Which I can't believe seeing as how the majority of the 335i owners did in fact hage the steptronic. So I was the one left out bashed on cause I had the 6mt and how we couldn't keep up with the autos and all. I've been there and witnessed that first hand.

Lmao. Don't insult me my friend. I know the difference between the gears in my car and can and will tell you again that the damn car downshifts into 1st. I have tested and confirmed myself. You can even feel the car shift between 1st and 2nd gear. You will feel a small nudge.

My scenario:
I would test the car by leaving it in DS and accelerating to 60mph so that it can get into 5th. Then as I began to slow down, I can see, feel and hear the car downshifting. When I get to a light once stopped, I hit the shifter to shift into 2nd gear and what do you know, that nudge is still there and the DS goes to M2. Which is correct as if I were in DS on the highway and the revs are too high I hit the next gear up and the transmission goes +1 gear always from DS. So therefore I know first hand that it shifts into 1st gear. Look I will try and get some video in becuase I too am surprised because for the the longest time I've though and told others that they start in 2nd gear.
