For the A/C in the 1, yes, definitely you have to run the recirculation. For the circle with the "A" in it, that is automatic mode in which it actually does recirc only half the time. The circle without the "A" in it puts it in recirc only mode, and that cools the car down nicely. I have a vert and I have not tinted the windows yet, so it is as hot as it can be, and the recirc mode works.
I just had a 328 loaner, and let me tell you, even my wife noticed it before I did, that it is the same crappy A/C as I had in my last 3 series. Even with 60 degrees and full recirc, the car NEVER gets cold. It doesn't even get cool, even when it was raining out. Total joke of A/C in the 3 series. Put the car in total recirc mode, tint the windows with a tint film that has a high degree of reflectivity (tint % is irrelevant, you can have 30% or 10%, but UV Reflection is a separate bit), and you will have no further issues.

5000 miles on the loaner, shouldn't have needed it.
29000 miles on my last 3 Series, never worked right. Multiple loaners, never good air on the 3. So if yours works, you are the exception. For your sake...good!
