Passenger Window won't go up, clanking noises, etc. HELP!!!
I put my window down, then when I tried to put it back up it didn't move and all I heard were clanking and rattling and the sound of some sort of motor in the door. Something is definitely muffed up
What do you think this is? Is it an expensive fix? The car has 38000 miles Thanks for any help!!! Last edited by chris82; 10-20-2014 at 08:53 PM.. |

the plastic spool has been chewed up by the cable. You will need the new cable , rails, plastic spool - the window regulator repair kit, about 100-150 at the dealer and a long DIY day. Look up window reset procedure and be patient with the motor if it stops working- simply disconnect it and reconnect and wait it will reset.
Next see if you can get plastic trim pry tools and electrical tape to avoid damaging paint the stickly black goo dust seal will go all over everything you touch - it is resealable, just be patient you will need a plumbers monkey wrench( and old tshirts to wrap it in to make it all nice and soft inside the door) to turn the Star window holders on the inside - the torx you see in front of you is the wrong end of the Star shaped handle style bolt. Apparently the coil over wrenches work okay too

Yup, sounds like your window regulator is toast. It is an $600 repair from what I remember seeing posted here.

Yes but the window doesn't really know how many miles the car has traveled it knows how many times it went up and down. Are you within warranty? If so, the expense is not your issue. My 2009 is out of warranty and has even less miles - but is working fine so far.

Okay I brought it in this morning to Bavarian Specialties, they were able to get it all done by 3 today. Turned out to be $484 for parts and labor. Just in time before it rains tomorrow!

Thats not a bad price. My drivers side was something like 700 to fix at the dealer.
If I didn't need it fixed that day, I would have just done it myself, but I was going to be on a university campus from around 7am to 9pm in a parking structure with no available parking after 9am. Still took the dealer 4 attempts to get the window properly aligned with the top and the rear window. For some reason the new regulator failed to keep the tilt angle after 6 hours or so, so it would be tilted drastically into the middle of the car, completely blocking the rear from raising up fully. |

E90's are easier since they have frames, and e82's are easier than e88's since e88's have their rear window which pivots up to close.
And.... I might have completely removed the rear window units to stop them squeaking and slightlymessedupthealignment. As for the alignment not holding, everyone was going WTF. No one had ever seen a car do that before. But, its been 2 months or so since it has been fixed, and its fine now. No leaks, even with a pressure washer and me attempting to make it leak. |
