Something's broken :(
Driving along today, I suddenly hear a loud scraping sound from the right side of the car. At first I thought I had picked up something from the road and it was stuck somewhere. A quick visual inspection didn't reveal anything.
It sounds like metal on metal - and the scraping only happens when the steering is turned straight forward or to the right. It does not scrape when I turn to the left. The frequency of the sound is also proportional to the speed of the car - so obviously there is some point on one of the wheels that is constantly scraping against something else as it rotates past that point. In any case, I'm not game enough to drive my car out of the garage now. Advice?

That's what I was leaning towards too, but this came out of nowhere without warning. Advan had a look at them a few months ago and they were fine then.

Can you please elaborate on this? I can take a quick look and see if this is the case

The sound did just suddenly come out of nowhere - car was driving fine the whole day. I guess if this is the case then there isn't much to worry about.

You might have picked up a rock in the brake caliper. Try backing up quckly (make sure you are safe to do so, in a parkade somewhere) and apply the brakes hard. That might shake it loose.

This is possible, i.e a small piece of gravel or rock stuck in brake calliper but removal is not via braking hard but putting your car in reverse and normal driving/braking for a reasonable distance, thereby dislodging the gravel/rock from its forward-lodged position.

A rock scraping sounds like metal on metal. The bit about it stopping when you turn left however makes me doubt it being a rock. Last edited by dh58; 10-02-2011 at 11:55 PM.. |

Exactly. It doesn't make a noise when I'm turning left, which makes me think some component is rubbing against the wheel when it's straight ahead or right.

Took off the wheel and it turned out to be a small piece of concrete between the metal shield and the rotor. Was certainly a bitch to get out but hey, nothing major!
Again thanks for the input.
