finally got the sharkfin antenna painted and installed:
remove the plastic pins from the roof lining: open the lining from the tailgate end and squeeze your hand in to loosen a nut under the antenna. for my car i had to squeeze a wrench in there to unbolt it(5 year old car). but other owners have unscrewed it with their fingers. under the antenna base are 5 torx screws to unscrew to release the cap. It was recommend putting a metal contact to where the antenna stick attaches so i just used a keyring and slot it in contact and electrical tape to isolate from other electrics. I have no idea if that keyring will improve reception because my radio reception was already good without it. screw the bolt back under the antenna and attach the sharkfin on top with double sided tape Last edited by blingers; 08-30-2010 at 06:22 AM.. |

thanks disco. i had doubts on the look with the fin antenna but then i saw some prototype shots of the new F20 1er that has a sharkfin antenna.
an update on the led licence plate lights... last night i got the bulbout error on the obd for the license lights. both lights were out so i replaced them with the stock halogen bulbs... still NO light?! so i spent an hour checking the fuses (didn't know what the license plate light symbol was in the legend!) but fuses were fine. I then replugged the leds and one worked! the other light was dead so reinstalled the halogens and they worked as normal! no more obd error I couldn't find an explanation for halogen lights not working the first time (fuses were OK) but one of the led lamps (the working one) was very hot to touch and smelt like melting plastic this warped the connector (right side): so it could be heat-related? or a CANBUS safety system? still confused... i hope the car wiring wasn't damaged from this but things are good so far with the stock lights. the ebay seller was really nice and gave me a full refund so I'll invest in the OEM LCI leds. I'll miss the brightness of the ebay ones but don't want to risk it with another set |

ordered a new ignition lock from germany for 50 euros (compared to AUD245 at the local dealer) and installed it myself. took about 15minutes and that was my first time dismantling a beemer! the dealer wanted at least AUD160 to install but no surprise there...
the original lock when ordering the part i noticed the lock changed part numbers two times so i ordered the newest one. the only difference i noticed was that in my original lock you can push the inside of the slot with your finger whereas you cannot with the new one. only when you insert the key it will push in. bought a bmw jack kit and a pair of footwell lamps. lci led license lamps are on the way. |

Nice work with the ignition lock...
also with the antenna.. i made the some but in my case i have removed the intire piece so my "shark" is totally empty inside... after 3 years I'm facing now some captation problems in some areas and same FM stations...next mood will instal an internal antena in the front windshield and connect the wire direct in the radio. (disconnect the original) cheers. |

interesting that you removed the antenna. it didnt fit under your shark fin cover? there is another antenna in the rear window too but i guess thats not effective by itself. i have no problems with radio reception at the moment but i live close to the city. i'll have to drive into the country to test the antenna. today i received the lci led license lamps: installed them with no problems but a little disappointed with the colour... its not as white as the ebay ones. hmm...
started retrofitting the footwell lamps following smithys diy. I need to find a suitable double leaf spring contact to fit in the footwell module. genuine bmw contacts only come in 25 pack for 11 euros. i just need one. |

thanks lito!
No success with getting someone to recode the taillights yet. next is changing the air filter. at the moment i just washed the grey cover in a bucket of water and the water turned black after that. not much else to do to the car. maybe door light retrofit in the future. |

im thinking of having a piano black interior by using gloss black vinyl from www.bmwshadowline.com but also a gloss black roof?!
here is a photoshop: i wonder how scratch resistent is the gloss vinyl? and if i can get it that glossy. the more shine the better imo like a glass roof. |

if you can by any chance match it with the tints then yeah it'd look sick! good luck with it!
