Phillip Island track day, Sunday 9th February (PIARC)

There is a group of 1ers attending the following PIARC event (first round, Victorian SuperSprint Championships).

http://www.piarc.com.au/files/VSSC%2...014%20Regs.pdf

Each session will include four flying laps. Saturday is also available for practice and instruction.

All the major automobile clubs are active during the first fortnight of February, so it is possible this event will be undersubscribed

Early bird entries before 28th January, 2014. Otherwise, the usual regulations apply (extinguisher, licencing, garages, scrutineering, conduct).

James, He is just jealous that you are running a slightly faster time than him first time around. Just slash his precious tyre when you see him next

Hopefully this is the last time with the old Federal 595s, and we dip below the 2 min mark... I have a friend doing a CAMS licence test in my car on the 9th too (2 x 5 mins and 2 x 15 mins), so it will have a big day!

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of coming along but wasn't sure which gives more track time. The state round on Sunday or open practise Saturday.

What do you guys think?
If Saturday there's experienced drivers to also show/correct some lines for me, I think that'd be a good result. Just want to make sure it won't be speed restricted or anything?

Thoughts?

Hey mate,

There won't be speed restrictions on Saturday, just no official timing. In terms of attendance it might be best to contact PIARC directly and see what numbers they currently have across both days. I've heard of both instances where numbers drop from sat to sun due to vehicle issues and fatigue to numbers increasing as some might just do the sunday instead.

I think those that are going (usual crew) are inked in for Sunday.

Nice. Is this his 1st tracked OLT ? Is he gearing for national or intl license ?

Answers to queries

Some queries which I shall address, just in case others had similar questions ...

1. Is this similar to Driver Dynamics (DD)?

It is similar in that participants are driving around a circuit.
However, DD conduct driver education type events, where there is usually a heavy bias towards occasional drivers, novices, and those with luxury vehicles. Conduct is tightly regulated and tends to be conservative and courteous; for example, overtaking is confined to straightaways. Instructors are available for assistance.
Club sprints, including PIARC, are for competition. Some clubs have higher standards; some clubs have lesser standards. Regardless, drivers are usually experienced, running modified vehicles, with personal objectives, and behaviour is therefore more aggressive. Like DD, groupings tend to be stratified (so that drivers are of a similar standard), but it is not always possible to identify fast drivers or fast vehicles. Furthermore, only one participant is allowed in a vehicle at a given time (ie neither in-car instruction nor passengers are permitted).
We are all novices at one point, and this is entirely acceptable, but the differences in driver education versus competitive events should be expected.

2. Does insurance cover incidents on track?
No.
But we certainly wish it did!

3. Does this event require a CAMS licence?
Yes.
Generally, club events require a CAMS (or equivalent) licence. This is only a matter of paying $100 (valid for twelve months), and does not involve any competency assessment.
Generally, driver education events do not require any licensing.

Although still trying to learn myself, I hope these answers provide further perspective for those who may be interested

It is his 1st OLT. Going for his national circuit licence (not international). Same as V8 Supercar guys and allows him to do national events.

Thanks!

Hopefully the notorious PI weather will hold up.

Evans hopefully will have my new Quick fit harness fitted and Howard from Race Brakes some new ME20 pads.

Looking forward to meeting the crew.

I feel sorry for the legendary WRX club, given the forecast this weekend. Or perhaps you would enjoy a relaxing day at Winton (ambient 42oC)?

Don't worry - pretty sure they'll be looking out for you.

No thanks! Turbos + heat + red mist = trouble

Garages are $180 per double. Given the weather and competition, these might be in demand ie queuing before 0700.

Several of us will require garages for storage-set up-cover, but if others are interested in sharing then feel free to express interest here. It is also preferable to aim for adjacent allocations.

We just got an email from CAMS:
90-odd entries so far in the Sprint groups.
24 in the CAMS Observed Licence Test (OLT) group.

Total max permitted is 140.

How many were at the Maserati day, and how many normally in a group?

Glad the cool change is coming Sunday morning, but hope no rain involved...

Thanks for the update, James.

Our previous PI (Maserati) event included 51 participants in three groups. This was highly irregular.

When PIARC hosts 100-120, there are generally six groups (sometimes including an exclusive open-wheeler group) ie 20-25 per group.

Unfortunately, Phillip Island is notoriously unpredictable!

What a day!

It was slow going with so many groups, however, and the first two sessions were pretty hot.

The fourth session was a real disappointment with WAY too many cars on track (groups 3 and 4 combined) so not a single clean lap.

I was troubled by tyre pressures, I think not lifting them enough once the cool change came was a mistake. As a result the tyres weren't at their best until the last lap of five in the last two sessions.

Thanks to the crew (Evans, Jeff, Ken et al) for making me welcome and swapping stories and equipment.

I vote we do a WRX day next for some more guaranteed track time. Jeff, your car sounded superb on drive-by!

Here's a quick pic of my brake rotor temperature after coming in.
