Anti-Rust 135i

Hi,
i live in Montreal Quebec, in the winter there is a lot of snow, they always put lot of salt and that makes the car rust.
My question is do you need to do an anti-rust treatment ?
cause i was told BMW doesnt rust its not like an Honda or Toyota the body is made from special material that wont rust
is it true?

help

Additional rust protection is a waste of money. I work for a company that deals with the Galvanize and Galvalume industries (Auto related). All of them use this type of process to protect the sheet metal from corrosion, so additional protection is not required. BMW probably uses a different process and supplier versus Toyota and Honda, but I do not know if it is better protection or not. The Japanese cars used to rust quickly due to inferior corrosion protection (to none at all in the '70 & '80s) but they have joined the industry in protecting the metal of autos. I also know of an American co that did not galvanize their doors or body to cut costs in the '90s b/c they were suppose to ship the cars to Tx. However, they ended up in Chicago and rusted rapidly. I think they learned their lesson.

My recommendation is to wash your car weekly especially in the winter when there is a lot of salt. Take it to a car wash that has an underbody spray option.

I haven't had any issues with rusting on my cars by doing this.

Rich is not telling you to go through with the additional protection. He is simply stating that it is a good idea to wash the salt off the car during the Winter, especially the undercarriage. This is what we do in Chicago and I guarantee we use just as much salt.

Cheers.

With modern cars, especially modern luxury cars, this isn't an issue at all. BMW also gives a 12 year rust warranty if you're worried. The rest of the car will go before the body/frame rusts.

All cars, from GM to BMW Group give the undercarriage rust treatments. Anything more is a waste. Don't buy into was the seller is spewing.
