Fortunately, this is a relatively minor issue.

The light from my replacement brake light assembly looks a lot better than the original. Definitely a different design. The individual LEDs aren't visible by the naked eye, my camera picked them up.

It looks pink(ish). Doesn't seem to match the tails. Is that due to the camera as well?
Just curious... |

Looks like a nice ride, perhaps you could treat us to a pic of the whole thing.

Thanks! I need to take a better photo of the blackline taillights in the daylight, they are a real nice color. The wheels are semi gloss powdercoat.

bmrdude3--Stay away from Joel Confer!
I live an hour away from JC, and 2-1/2 hours from Sun Motorcars, where I bought my 128. When my 3rd light broke, Sun fixed it without question in an hour, after asking me if I needed a loaner. Two years later, the fix is going strong. If you live anywhere near State College, head for Sun. They will do right by you. If you are looking for a new car, head for Kosta Touloumes, or anyone else there. Last time I was there, the general manager stopped and talked with me for 30 minutes about BMWs, and new models in the pipeline. It was the exact opposite of how I was treated at JC. |

my car is still on the original 3rd BL (30k miles), and while it's held up OK it has developed a very small hairline crack in it, maybe 2 centimeters in length...It hasn't seemed to spread or expand, so i'll see how it holds up.

jermskill,
My 218i came off of warrenty about 6 weels ago. Brought her to the dealer, BMW Sudbury, for a third breaklight fix. They gave me a loaner for the day, replaced the lens, and washed the car- no charge. They said that this issue was a known problem. I have seen that others on this forum has had a similar experience. You should expect to not pay for the repair. |

Not sure whats more frustrating, knowing that i will have to replace my 3rd BL, or hoping its the least of my problems.....its a good thing these cars are so fun, because they arent particularly reliable.

So I take it you've replaced it more than once? If so I guess that means that there is no new replacement part that has fixed the issue.
I would think that with the part like this there almost needs to be a NHTSB mandated recall. Brake lights are safety items after all. Does this occur in Europe also? |

Here is a related thread. Look at post #3 by Dack. My guess is this is NOT done in most cases (including mine). Hence the recurring problem. |

I think this time I'll bring it in to the dealer now that I know that there is an service bulletin.
So we'll see how it goes.

I got mine fixed for the first time about a week ago. It was past 3 years old before it broke. Half was missing when I went to put groceries in the trunk and the other half fell off in my garage a day later. They are supposed to have done the TB when they replaced it. It only took 30 minutes but I waited an hour to get them to wash the car too. I just dropped by on my way home from work - least hassle for me.
If I can go 3 years between fixes it won't be too bad. Jim

Tough when you're out of warranty.

Went to the dealer today and since I'm out of warranty they wanted to charge me "around $200 plus tax" (their words). I know I can get the part for around $60, but is this easy to install? I did a search and did not found a DIY on how to remove / replace the brake light.
