BMW Coolant.

Hi all,

Need to top up the coolant in the 125i and was after some advise. The service books say use BMW approved coolant but I've found a product called
COMMA X STREAM GREEN G48, FOR ALL BMW VEHICLES.

Has anyone else used this product, or can they recommend another product ?

If u r topping up, just use distilled or demineralised water it's fine.

I used coolant from Coles for topping up. Cost me about $4.

It's only $28 for 1.5L bottle of genuine BMW coolant from your dealer.
I wouldn't use the usual green coolant that you can get from Supercheap or Repco.

Thanks for the help guys will probably look into 1.5L BMW coolant, its a 50-50 mix with distilled water.

Go to BMW Parts Dept, they have bottles of BMW approved coolant for around $20-$30. Mix it with demineralised water.

My service guy (BMTS in Brendale) will only use BMW coolant for BMW's and Mini's. For Qld conditions, you only need the weaker mix (it doesn't freeze here). The bottle says it's "nitrite free". I guess other coolants use nitrite as an oxygen scavenger, and the nitrate formed from that could be corrosive. I think my bottle from BMW Brisbane cost <$20.

Mix it with demineralised, not distilled water, if you can. You can buy that from the supermarket.

Can't see much difference between the two. Distilled water picks up carbon dioxide from the air, so the pH can be a bit lower, but mixing it with the coolant lowers the solubility of the CO2 in water, and it will escape to the atmosphere. If you allow the demin water to sit around for a bit, it will also take up CO2 from the air. Quality of the demin water will depend on how the manufacturer looks after his deionizing columns or reverse osmosis membranes. That said, I use demin water from the supermarket in my lab. because it's cheaper than buying and running a lab demin unit.

Apart from chemistry of coolant, what concerns me more is the coolant flush intervals. According to BMW requirements I think they don't advise to flush the coolant at any fixed interval. My preferred independant mechanic says he does some chemistry test to decide when to flush the coolant. He mentioned that in a lot of cases BMW water pumps or radiator will fail before the coolant is changed. I request for the coolant to be flushed/changed every 3 years no matter what.

Thanks for all the help guys, Im planning on getting the car serviced this week sometime so I will get them to top up the coolant as well.
