Tree wins in a head on with a 135 in Vancouver Canada
I was driving down a busy First Ave in Vancouver on the weekend, just after a heavy rainstorm. The driver in his 20's just purchased this lovely Alpine white 2008 135i from his father 2 weeks ago. He told me "the driver ahead of him stopped suddenly, so he swerved off the road to avoid him". Luckily no one was hurt. The tree suffered some minor bark damage.
He was driving on a part of First Ave that is downhill. The tow truck driver said there is 4 or 5 accidents like this every week along this section of First Ave. The car probably can be repaired. The driver said he wan't actually going very fast when it happened. |

That sucks SOOOO bad! What a beauty. Hopefully they can fix that little bit of damage.

And just for your own personal edification, airbags deploy on collisions with fixed objects (like trees) at speeds as low as 8mph. Let me know the last time you drove anywhere at 7mph. http://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle+Shop...gs/General+FAQ

There would have been less damage had he run into the car ahead of him. Trees are nearly immovable, a stopped car is not.

Definitely! The only thing is if you rear-end someone it is generally considered your "fault," and then you are generally considered responsible for the damages to the other car regardless of the circumstances under which the crash occured. Like the guy above said, following too closely is THE most dangerous thing you can do on the roads. If you hit the tree, the tree won't sue your insurance company (or God forbid sue you) for damages.

Thanks, I've forgotten more about BMWs and their MRS than you know. I am an experienced BMW technician, not some condescending asshole on a message board. I was pointing out the airbags because when they deploy that adds quite a bit to the repair bill. |
