128i Maintenance Schedule
I recently bought a 2012 128i with 29k miles on it. I'm trying to establish a maintenance routine and am looking for advice.
I've looked through the forum and found various schedules and varying opinions. I put together this schedule based on some previous posts. Does this look about right? What am I missing? Oil change: 5K Brake fluid: 24K or every 2 years Power steering fluid: 24K or every 2 years Rear Differential fluid: 50K Manual gearbox fluid: 50K Spark plugs: 60K Antifreeze: 60K --- I'm the third owner. I have service records from the second owner. Here's what has been done so far that I'm aware of: 5/14/14 - 10,638 - Oil change, brake fluid flush, alignment 7/24/14 - 11,992 - Performance air intake, short shifter, rough idle (new code corrected) 3/31/15 - 18,116 - New battery, Oil change 18k miles 6/11/15 - 20,605 - New tires Conti extreme DWS 06 (225/45R17, 205/50R17) 9/8/15 - 23,530 - Oil change (5W-30) Me: 7/22/16 - 29,100 - Brake fluid, power steering fluid, oil change (5W-40) |

Your schedule is very good except I would push oil change to about 8K (as long a little short distance driving). 50K for diff and tranny is good but since car is new to you, I would do it soon.

Got it. Thanks. Also, the local indy shop used 5W-40 oil last week when I took it in for an oil change. I was expecting 5W-30 as that seems to be more common. Is it okay to run 5W-40? Should I switch to 5W-30 on next change?

Personally I change my oil more often than BMW recommends. Oil is cheap, motors are expensive. I use 5-6k miles or annually whichever comes first.
BMW pays for maint under warranty for the first few years, after that your on your own. How diligent you decide to be on the maintenance schedule depends on how long you plan on owning the car. IMO maint. cost less than repairs in the long run. Here is the schedule I decided on after doing far too much reading here and elsewhere. YMMV (literally) ;-) 135i Maint. Sched. Castrol 0w-40 or 5w-40 (LL-01) Oil change: 5-6k mi. Air filter: 2 yrs / 24k mi. Coolant flush: 2 yrs / 24k mi. Cabin air filter: 3 yrs / 45k mi. Brake fluid: 2 yrs / 24k mi. Power steering fluid: 30-45k mi. Spark plugs: 45k mi. w/ PPK or n54, 60k mi. If n55 or n52/51 Trans. flush/fill: 50k mi. Differential: 3 yrs / 50k mi. Water pump, tstat, rad. cap: 4 yrs / 55-65k (preventative maint. it will likely go between 70-100k, prefer not to get stranded) Fuel filter: 60k (in fuel tank) Belts/hoses: as needed or 100k mi.

Your schedule looks good. But I think I would change the trans(manual) and diff oils every 30K miles. I also favor short/frequent oil changes. The best oil is fresh oil! Especially IF you do lots of short city driving... I would change it more often. <5K miles or less.
Only things you forgot to mention are: interior pollen filter(every two years) check brakes and exhaust for wear, air filter(every 30 to 60K miles depending on how dirty it gets) and polly ribbed accessory belt every 90K or sooner if you see it starting to crack. Dackel
