What did you do to/for your 1er today?

Got this mess fixed:

Dummy me managed to knock his mountain bike over in his too-small garage right into the side of car.

PDR dude fixed it to 99%. One tiny paint chip that he filled and blended from the end of the handlebar. If you know where to look you can see it, but from any distance it's perfect. $220...

On the bright side - today I sign the contract for my new custom-built LEED-certified 230mph wind-rated garage with attached living quarters in Florida. I bought the double-lot next door to my current FL home. 1100sq/ft of garage, 1300sq/ft of 2bd/2ba house. Garage will be air-conditioned with 13' ceiling on one side for a 2-post lift. I am going to be very, very poor for a while, but it will be so worth it! The house will be pretty nice too.

I built a model (not my finest work, but a quick and dirty to show some ideas to the builder):

That back patio will be a screened in lanai - I need to glue that roof on, it's just wedged in there and got very crooked in transporting it to their office!

Working on smoothing out the tune finally. Several failed experiments with altering BMW WGDC control logic, back to stock logic and really fine tuning boost onset and fuel mixes. One more revision and I might have the throttle closures cured, so close.

It's really impressive what can be done on open source XDF and TunerPro.

Got my Mr12Volt and backup camera in... time to start pulling things apart. Looking forward to having android auto in this car, I've grown accustom to it from my other cars. I don't often navigate places, but it's awesome to be able to see real time traffic so I can chose different roads as I see fit.

I just realized while researching adjustable end links that I have a set of Hotchkiss adjustable front sway bar end links I bought back in 2017 stashed somewhere. I also never installed and still have the Hotchkiss rear end links that came with their 16mm rear bar.

Unfortunately, their adjustment is in the wrong direction.

How is it being mounted? Do you have the iDrive in your car from stock?

Very fun maintenance weekend for me. First time using the quick jacks from Kerbouchard and they work great! Absolute game changer from just stands and a floor jack in a public car garage if you’ve seen my history

I also have an e38 750 in the stable an unfortunately it’s too far apart in standard form. The e38 lads suggest a couple 2x4’s and you’re good to go.

I did an oil change with liqui moly 5w-40 molygen, as well as ceratec, though I think molygen already has some additives in it. Did the engine air filter, cabin air filter and valve cleaner in the tank

Soon on the dockets are the water pump, valve cover gasket (again T_T) and the front control arms!

The quickjack really is the best money you can spend on a car. Makes everything so much easier and safer!

Replying to endorse the 2x4 idea -- I have the 3500SLX model that doesn't span the jack points of any BMW, but I regularly lift e46/e82/e01's with it. Just center the QJ frame to minimize how much of the 2x4 overhangs the edge and let her rip. Works great!

Spring refresh: Brake lines, brake fluid flush, front rotors and pads, rear pads (OK, that was last weekend), adjustable front sway bar end links. And that destroyed underbody panel in the rear right corner.

Here are the Raceland end links next to the old (stock) ones (which had utterly blown joints/bushings – they were moving completely freely):


Anybody successfully removed the intermediate rear brake lines without dropping the subframe? If so, please share

I couldn’t, but every single one of my hard line connections was seized so I had to splice/repair all of them on the car which for sure couldn’t have been done with the subframe in the car.

All the others came off quite easily—admittedly after a bit of PB Blaster soaking, just to be sure—so I'm hopeful that once I can actually get any kind of wrench on them, these will too. One of the many times when I'm grateful for having a lifetime PNW car.

I have... didn't need to drop the subframe.
It was just a pain in the butt, but keep trying.
Helps to have two people, one wrenching and one guiding.

Busy weekend, need to try to get some photos but the car is so dirty right now... eek.

Installed a small lip spoiler on the back (used an E82 spoiler on my E88). Not 100% perfect match because of the trunk profile, but it's good enough and I'm a pretty detail oriented person.

Installed a Mr12volt AA/CP device. Absolutely love having AA in the car again so I can get live traffic updates on my commute - definitely helps me shave time off when I can see what roads are backed up. Pretty nice interface, only compliant is that it forces connection to my phone whenever the car is "active" so when doors are open, etc... which means when I'm working on the car I can't connect to my bluetooth speaker because it keeps hijacking my phone's bluetooth...

Also wrapped a few trim pieces in fake CF. 3M Dinoc stuff. Looks great, I couldn't stand the color wood grain that the car had, and the aluminum colored trim pieces are more than I want to pay. Still need to either convince myself to pull the center console to get to the cubby trim, or make an attempt to install in the car, which seems like it will be frustrating

backup camera is still waiting to be installed - I need to figure out the wiring for that. Also need to strip the scratched up anti-glare coating on the nav screen and apply the anti-glare screen protector that I bought.

Got a part# to the sway bar links?

The rear brake lines on mine were rusted pretty bad, watched many YouTube vids to see what people where doing to avoid damage while removing rusty brake lines. Apparently heat is the fix that's how I got mine off without damage and took 1-2mins total, just don't go crazy as the fuel tank is close by. I used a propane torch from the local hardware store

I don't (have a p/n), oddly enough. They're not on their site, so I called Raceland to talk to them about them and ended up just buying them right there over the phone. They feel very solidly made and with good hardware, but obviously time will tell. So far, all thumbs up for Raceland as a business.

P.S. Blow torch basically aiming at the fuel tank: yikes.

Yea I was desperate car was apart and had to get it done quick but took precautions lol, I had a fire extinguisher and some thick exhaust heat shielding from another parts BMW so used that sheet as a barrier and only used the torch for a min at most at distance that seemed to break the rust loose because I got them off no problem after that, I was pissed I'd spent an hour+ and $20+ in "specialty" tools messing with them and trying different tools to get the lines loose and all it took was a min or 2 of heat :/ (do this at your own risk)

Quickjacks are fantastic. I've got a set of the 5000TL I bought from Costco last year and they've made everything easier.
