ER charge pipe - DV or blow off

I'm planning to buy a an ER charge pipe for my 1M and can't decide whether to reuse the stock DVs or get the TIAL blow off set up. A third option would be the Forge replacement DVs.

My car is stock and my objective is to increase reliability for street use and occasional HPDE. Looking for opinions as to advantages and disadvantages of each set up.

Thanks

I too am interested in hear others preference and results..

I also am curious exactly what does the charge pipe look like?

Apparently there are two different models. One for those 2010 and earlier N54 (that have a remove-able accordion rubber connector and 2011 and later models where the rubber piece is permanently attached.

Can anyone confirm which one is correct for the 1M..??
I would assume the longer but is that absolutely a necessity.. ??

Thanks..

OP - I am planning on running the original DVs.. As I do not plan on tracking my car and I am still on the fence about a tune.

Great Car..

Unless you'll be running higher boost levels from an aftermarket tune, no reason to switch from the stock diverter valves.

My 2 cents.

get an ER charge pipe with a forge DV. You'll lose about 5-7hp with a blow off valve.

Why is the Forge DV better than stock? More reliable? I haven't heard anyone mention any failure of a stock DV before.

Failures are pretty common at higher boost levels.

Not sure about the n54 valves from forge but typically they are serviceable and you can swap the springs to a desired levels.

In short, the car was designed for DVs unless you want to tune around the complications of BOVs you should stick with DVs.

Definitely DVs unless you go very high boost. Don't want to loose that power to sound .

If you are not tracking or tuning, then really there is no need for a chargepipe until the stock dies. If it is for looks - it certainly looks good! I will try to post some pics tonight.

I had this same question recently when I replaced my broken stock charge pipe with the ER pipe. I have the COBB stage 2+ intercooler tune, so I'm running more than stock power levels. I asked COBB about the advisability of upgrading the stock diverter valves and here is the advice I got:

"Initially the stock valves should hold up very nicely. Heat and time does takes it's toll on them. If you want to be cautious, I would recommend the Forge BPVs. They have worked great on the our 335i stock all the way up to the aftermarket turbos. Hope that helps."

So, I plan to wait until my stock ones melt or wear out at some point in the future. So far, all the new plumbing is holding together.

Stock DV's with ER CP is fine if you are stock or slightly elevated boost levels. Forge DV's will give you more reliability at higher boost levels.

We went with the BOV simply because of the cleaner look, without the additional couplers.

I am not sure about losing 5-7hp as I have seen no data on this. I would say theoretically at higher rpm where our stock turbo struggles would see some benefit having air recycled back after the turbo.

Now, BOV has been run on many N54 without any report of loss of power so it might not be significant.

That swoosh sound many people like to hear carries some energy - but probably not that significant.

A valve that allows excessive air build-up to escape once the throttle bottle closes does nothing to add, nor take away, horsepower created by the engine. Could allowing the air to vent outside create a small lag in the throttle response in the time it takes to fill the intake back with air immediately afterwards? yea... but by no means does an external venting BOV do anything to the HP, especially not take away 5-7 as stated above. Or... because bullshit. like I said. Lol

hmmm, in actual fact there is no difference at all between DVs and BOVs.

I'm currently running my ER chargepipe together with Tial BOV, the response seems better than stock IMO.

Anyone tried both BOV and Forged DVs?

So can you tell us if there is a difference between ER CP with forge DVs and the ER CP with a BOV?
