my guess would be yes as they the same chassis. My only concern would be length of the ends might be too long as the 1m has a wider track. I've thought about this upgrade too, but I something its with the cost unless you're going to be racing and in a position where it would really make a difference.

I was also thinking about this. The E82/E88/E90/E91/E92/E93 all share the same rack so if we can find a E90 guy who has swapped that means we are good (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do?part=32106777463). Likewise, the M3 and 1M share the same steering rack (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do?part=32102283633). There are some slightly different shields with the racks however, but I don't think they will affect anything. I would also imagine the tie rod ends won't matter since you should be able to align out the slight difference.
The 2.2 ratio rack is much faster than the 2.75 rack of the 135i. I'd like to make the upgrade but won't be able to afford it in the near future. If anyone else gives it a shot that would be awesome. It's common to swap racks on cars (E36 often swapped the Z3 rack in for 2.5 ratio instead of 3.25+). |

It should fit. I would contact Harold at HPA... I believe he is doing this mod for a customer car right now. Lets not forget it was Harold who was one of the first to install an M3 suspension in a 135i. Now that mod is common place. |

For those curious.. The 1M rack and shield are:
Rmfd hydro steering gear 32102283633 $1,707.91 qty=1 ASA-Bolt M10X70-10.9 32106773068 $4.37 qty=2 (one time use) HEAT RESISTANT PLATE 32106780920 $17.63 qty = 1 there is a 500.00 core charge, and since you wont be returning the same part back, that 1707.91 turns into 2207.91..... dont know if your local parts dept will do what they can and just take the wrong core back, YMMV ??? Plus install and alignment.. seems like a "one of those things id do if i found a bag full of cash" dreams.

That's a lot of money. I don't know anything about these things, but they cost a lot less than $2200.

I have always thought that the M3/1M tie rods would make for a good upgrade to our cars. Even with out the M rack.
IF your gonna install all the M suspension bits on your mon M car... the M tie rods would be the icing on the (//M) cake. |

Does anyone know if the M3 ones would fit? How are they different from the stock 135i tie rods?

I doubt you would want the M3 tie rods with the stock rack. What's the reason? They aren't made of a different material or anything, just designed for the toe of the stock M3/1M track.

The 1M also has servotronic, which helps the ease of turning at lower speeds. This isn't an easy feature to add to a standard 135.
What is the difference in feel/response when swapping or upgrading the tie rods? For those who have done it of course. TIA |

I don't think servotronic affects the steering rack. I thought it only affects the boost produced by the power steering pump depending on speed and steering angle? As far as I can tell, the E90 and E82 only have 1 rack despite the offering of active steering with servotronic.

Active steering and servotronic are 2 different systems. The servotronic does increase the boost, but it's a hardware issue between the jbe and dme mainly. Aside from the extra wiring. Steering would probably be quite heavy at low speeds without it if the rack was swapped in. I've really thought about it, but not sure it would be beneficial with the side effects...

The reason why the complete tie rod is different is because the 1M/M3 has a different rack and pinion. |
