Ignition Timing
The manual recommends "BMW recommends AKI 91". I am assuming that is Octane 91. I normally use 93. Now can I go to 99? I heard something about "Ignition Timing" and Octane increase. Do I need to do anything if I decide to go for the 99 Octane that Shell is offering? Not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination so help is needed. I have been listening to YouTube videos but still confused.

Your factory tune can't tell the difference, since it's tuned to make the best power with 93. If you are running an aftermarket tune, or jb4, you will benefit from running the shell fuel.

I have a PPK1 and that is all. I wonder if there would be a slight increase in hp moving up to 99 or just the benefit of running a cleaner engine.

Most likely a cleaner engine and a couple hp. Nothing drastic though. You need more ignition timing to benefit from the increase in octane. That can only be done with an aftermarket flash.

On 2nd thought I will go for the Shell 99 Octane with my 2012 135i and stay with 93 with my 2003 325i. I like the idea of a cleaner engine and maybe a little more hp. Last edited by Stock4Evr; 06-20-2015 at 12:17 PM.. |

It would be a waste of money running more than 93 octane without a JB4 or Cobb.

If you dont think you can do it yourself, just pay a mechanic or a user member $50 and they would install it for you. Takes 30- 45 minutes.

The JB4 is seriously simple to install. Just follow the directions. Ive done it 3 or 4 times now. It's easier than wiring up an aftermarket stereo.

i cobb flashed my n54 had no problem getting a new transmission, coils, spark plugs, injectors plus many other things done under warranty. so why wait get a cobb or jb4 now if anything it actually wears out any weak component in your car so its better to chip it now so if any problems arise the dealer will figure it out.

the tune will help you expose any weak component in your car before your warranty expires.
