one shredded tire ?
I usually rotate tires after each time at the track but foolishly didn't this last time and my left front tire is shredded and down to the cords but the other three are just down to the wear bars.
My question is could I get away with just replacing the one tire and get a little more life out of the set or should I just replace the set or...? By the way, it is a square setup. 225/40/18 each corner. Last edited by Kim Schwartz; 10-28-2012 at 11:14 AM.. Reason: more information |

what do you plan to do when the other 3 need to be swapped?

on closer look..
My original thought was that I might let the other tires catch up in wear since that one corner wears so much more than the other three on this track. However on closer inspection I think that I will just replace the set. I just put the original Pirelli euphoria staggered 17's back on in the interum. As I never particularly liked the Pirellis I think that I will use those on the track for now and destroy them........

IF you track a lot... you might look into a shop that does "tire shaving". You really do not want to run full thread depth on the track HPDE. You will end up heat chunking the tires. Its much better to run with worn out or low thread depths, like when the tires are shaved.

This is only true for some tires and certain drivers. Like if a faster driver tries to take all seasons or some max performance tires out on the track. You rarely see tires in the extreme performance category (star specs, re11, ad08, rs3, ecsta xs... ect) chunk even from full tread depth. The only race tire I hear that is necessary to shave is the toyo ra1 becasue its an old design using tall bolcks with little support. Its also not a great idea to use 1 brand new tire that you shaved down to the others tread depth as the new tire will have a different level of grip than the other 3. This is because tires heat cycle out over time, meaning they loose grip after going through enough heat cycles. Hope this helps. |
