BMW has stated that they will be bringing diesels to the US in 2008. It will probably be the X5 first with others to follow. 123d certainly looks intriquing, but BMW has only announced plans to bring the 128i and 135i to the US. Based upon the success of the 1 Series, I suspect that BMW will then expand the range to include the 1er diesels. Anyway, I doubt that we will see them before 2009 or 2010.

BMW 535d at Top Gear
If you have doubts about BMW's new diesels check out the video at YouTube of the Top Gear review of the 535d:
And even if you could care less about diesels, the video is pretty entertaining. Enjoy! |

Kab, don't give up hope so quick. I'm hoping BMW will get the message and send us the 123d as a 2009 model in the fall of 2008 with the rest of the 2009 models.
Hey ibeam, I love that video. There are three things to keep in mind while watching it. 1) Top Gear chose to pair it up the 2004 3 liter 6-cyl diesel up with the 2004 4.5 liter V8, not a 3 liter 6-cyl gas engine. Not quite the "equivalent" gas engine BMW was talking about. But the diesel still did a good job of keeping up despite the huge difference in engine size. 2) The 123d has a light aluminum engine mated with a 6-speed manual, not a heavy steel engine like Jeremy complains about, mated to an automatic tranny. The 123d is actually 145 lbs lighter than the 135i. 3) The 2004 535d engine technology they tested is a generation behind the 123d diesel engine technology. The new generation engine has a couple of major improvements: All-Aluminum engine instead of steel auto start-stop third-generation Common Rail Injection with piezo injectors @ 2000 bar pressure vs. 2nd gen with solenoids and 1600 bar pressure I'm dying to try one out. |

Think of the MPG delta between the two as well.
Also, turbo diesels are very good candidates for "upgrades"...While still maintaning streetablility and economy. *Which came first, the gas or diesel engine? *Which one is going to fill the void until the Internal combustion engine is dead? I've got a hunch, but I'm not sayin'...
