Windscreen stone chip repairs
Hey guys,
as a result of my freeway driving i've finally got a couple of stone chips on my windscreen. theres 2 main areas. one has a couple of stone chips all of which are superficial and have not cracked, and the second one has got about a 0.7-1cm crack. I figure i should prob try and get it fixed up before i have to replace it. But just wondering if anyone knows if some repairers are better than others??? i rang up o'brien and they kept crapping on about how they have a bmw and merc specialist at their store, and something about encapsulated glass. anyone know if there is any truth to this? |

Hey matey, where did you end up going?
Just my luck, I got a stone chip on the M1 on Tuesday - dropping off car at Charlie Battisti tomorrow but they don't do windscreens. |

I had O'Briens do a chip in mine and was very pleased with the result.
Of interesting note- the O'Brien tech commented that it's preferable to always repair a chip unless the screen has to be replaced. He went on further to say the reasons behind that comment are that the thickness of BMW glass is greater than the ADR spec and of good quality, that replacing the screen is always going to be a traumatic affair due to the physical manipulation required to remove it and the screen has it's best fit and seal from factory. I just wish the stone chips on my bonnet could have been repaired as quickly and cheaply as the windscreen chips |

another positive vote for obriens here. had a 2mm x 4mm chip in my windscreen, totally covered under insurance since i have windscreen cover. brought the car in, asked the guy where a good place to have lunch was, had lunch, came back, chip was gone
well not totally gone... if you know where to find it you can just barely see it inspecting from the outside - but it's totally invisible from the inside. |

Charlie Battisti done my windscreen, he just replaced the whole thing for two chips (no cracks). I had the windscreen cover option with racv so didn't cost a cent .

Hmm read a few bad reviews on O'Briens but sounds like it's the way to go!
Damn! Might be time to upgrade my policy... |

Both the 1 and the MINI that I've owned have had windscreens that looks like they've been sandblasted after <12 months, and both have cracked. If that's good quality, I'd hate to see bad. |

Until it's repaired, try your best not to use the air conditioner and keep the cabin temperature as close to outside temperature as possible.
The reason being if heat or cold hits the windscreen and it is different from the outside temperature, this can expand or contract the glass and therefore the crack may suddenly become a full windscreen crack. |

I was wondering how much obriens would charge without windscreen cover - windscreen cover was $63 on top of the standard premium for me, so seems like it was worth it (Actually maybe not, given that I've had 1 chip fixed in the 10 years I've been driving... although this was the first year I decided to get windscreen cover...) |
