Disassemble rear view mirror
Does anyone know how to disassemble the rear view mirror?
I am hoping to install my concealed display for my Valentine 1 radar detector inside the mirror. I am aware that I can pay to have this done, but I would really like to do it myself. Thanks! |

The plastic cover at the base where it attaches to the windshield is split down the middle. Like two clam shells. Pull them apart - then once off, take the mirror and rotate counter clockwise(I believe) 90' derees. The mirror will come right off. Don't forget to unplug the connecter for the electronics. G.L.

Scuderia - you should pm these guys who do the V1 radar detector install in the mirror. Perhaps they could shed some light on how to crack(pun intended!) the housing apart.

I was thinking I would like to find an unused/broken mirror to try this out on before dismantling and likely breaking my own since the auto-dim and homelink mirror costs so much. Do you think a BMW dealer would be willing to give me a defective one if they have one laying around? Maybe I could go to a salvage yard and get one there, but I don't want to pay much for a test mirror. Any ideas? |

Why not just pay the pieper and have one of the vendors on this forum(or on the e90 forum) do the install? After all... I am sure they "learned" how the split the mirror apart and now do it expertly. Do you really want to learn on your $500 mirror? As far as the dealers having to send all parts back to BMW NA... well... that is just BS. Only the small dealers who are on fraud alert - must do that. Most dealers have a good relationship with BMW NA - they can self authorize repairs and they simply hold the parts for maybe 90 max - until BMW NA pays them for the warranty repair. Then the old parts are tossed in the trash or the tech keeps it and sells it on ebay(!) or something. And ofcourse IF you still want to do this on your own... there is always plan "c" which is rent a BMW and "learn" on that car's mirror. But that is kind of ballsy. Dackel |

You just have to pry the mirror apart. It's a bunch of clips around the outside. my procedures were as follows: 1 - get a new mirror so I didn't mess up my original. 2 - Open mirror up (it's hollow, so there is plenty of room to work) 3 - disassemble V1 concealed display, and use what's left to trace onto the back side of the glass. Note: Make sure you account for the power wire. I had to make the scraped part of the glass bigger than I wanted because I ended up having to slide it more to the right. 4 - scratch all the backing off the mirror where you are planning on putting the V1. 5 - Attach the V1. I used a few strips of electrical tape. It's holding perfectly. There may be better methods of doing this, but it worked. 6 - cut a little slot in the top of the mirror (where the seams come together). This will allow the power cord to come out of the mirror when you reassemble. 7 - go to car, and plug in your wires (this DIY assumes you've already run/hidden the cables) 8 - reassemble and reattach mirror 9 - ??? 10 - profit! Here is your video link embeded...
Thanks for the update and video. But after ALL that work you did not even hide your V1 ??? Why not "hide" the unit in your rear headrest or parcel tray? Dackel |

What did you use to scratch the back side of the glass? Also, I noticed that you changed out some of the red LED's that indicate the type of radar band and laser. Can you shed some light on that too? Thanks again! Last edited by e82n54; 04-10-2011 at 11:33 AM.. |

Thanks, it's not the auto dim. I used a razor blade to scratch off the coating.
The V1 was like that when I bought it. No LEDs changed by me, so unfortunately I can't explain how they got that way I've seen people replace them on the boards here before though.
