Am I Lugging my 1M?

I have read that lugging the engine is bad, but the definition of lugging is quite blur (high load at low RPM) and may varies from engine to engine, so i'm trying to identify (base on an 1M) what actions are regards as lugging, please tell me what I list below you would regard as lugging:

1. Cruising at around 1000 - 1500 rpm with light acceleration occasionally
2. Flooring the accelerator in 6th at around 2000 rpm.
3. Rolling towards a red light till the rev drop below 1000 rpm then clutch-in.

Thanks

I can relate to this.

It's the engine which is so strong @ low revs.

Downtown taking miniroundabouts in 3rd most of the time.< 20 mph.

I had this a few times taking a miniroundabout I thought: Less thrust than normal. wth? It was in 4th.... Just my own laziness, not thinking about spirited driving at all sometimes.

I think it's best to keep it above 1500rpm in general for the engine's sake...

Cheers
Robin

The gear change indicator usually changes at 1500rpm so I think as Robin said 1500rpm would be the min rpm to keep the engine happy without lugging it.

Personally, I like to keep the rpm between 2000-2500rpm in city driving. 5th and 6th only for freeway driving.

The N54/N55 engine(s) make so much tq down low its really hard to lug it. Even when I go around a traffic circle(or driving slowly in a residential area) in 2nd or 3rd(1,100rpms)... the engine just picks up speed with no issues.

I think if you were to do that in 4th or 5th gears.... or anytime you get the engine to shake/lug,,, that would be bad. But as long as the engine isn't protesting/shaking... I think that is ok.

Now when doing that I would not go WOT at those low revs... I would not want to squash my crank bearings... but for light acceleration I see no problem driving like that.

Normally when the engine revs fall bellow 2K rpms... I grab the next lower gear.

Keep revs at or above 1500 and always hit rev limiter (at least once) each time you drive.
All good.

So true!

This thread = WTF.

So is this how to hyper-mile your 1M?

Why not hyper mile? It's just a tweaked 1 series after all.

+1.
What I do in those circumstances:
1) I cruise on the highway at 2000+ rpm which is occasional since I don't cruise much! The one device I never used in any of my cars is the cruise control anyway. In 1M I also do not use the bluetooth since I don't like receiving or making calls while I drive, this one is a bit too grumpy I know.
2) I don't try to accelerate from low rpm when I am at 6th, don't even like the sixth, down shifting is better in every respect. The gears that I floor the gas pedal for passing (in gear acceleration) is 2 to 4th, I even down shift from 5th to 4th let alone 6th.
3) I don't roll towards red lights, not good for compound brakes

Yes we do have loads of low down torque but the engine is still much happier after 2000, even 2500 rpm. Dynoes also show that in reality max torque is reached in mid 2000s which confirm (at least my) butt dyno. So, for cruising 2000 to 3000 makes more sense to me, cause it is more pleasant, you always have full tq on stand by ready to start flying in case you need to pass, and as long as you drive smoothly by avoiding unnecessary braking and by looking ahead and adapting to traffic which most people find too much of a job but imo is the essence of driving on public roads, I bet you also waste only a fraction of more gas if any compared to trying to cruise around 1000 to 1500 rpm.

Just try to change your driving behaviour a bit, see what the car likes more, there is no car with a sweet spot starting with idle and ending at rev limiter, you need to find it; that's my advice.

To achieve max torque at 1500 RPM (as advertised) you would need to open the throttle under load from idle. In practical driving, that would be ridiculous.

I usually drop to 4th to make a pass on the highway. I had an experience a few months ago where I passed someone in 6th gear (not realizing it) and the car pulled hard enough that I thought I was in 4th. I didn't realize it had actually been in 6th until I tried to make a 4-5 shift.

Thanks for all your opinions I just got my 1M recently, still trying to figure out the best driving style

I'm not trying to hyper-mile it particularly, the reason I start off driving like these is:
1. The engine put out quite a bit of torque below 2000rpm
2. The shift indicator prompts me to upshift as soon as rev reaches 2000rpm.
these gave me the impression that I don't need to rev above 2000rpm when cruising. But now I know that's probably not the best way to drive it

Am I missing something? I have never seen a shift indicator . . . is this feature only used in some markets?

It's a standard feature for us in Aust. I'm pretty sure it's standard for all 1M but if you press M mode, it is deactivated (could be why you are not seeing it).

Since the 1M has an turbo motor, it makes a lot of torque at low revs, so the three actions you stated would not be considered lugging the engine. However, if it was an NA motor like the M3, that style of driving would be considered lugging the engine and would decrease engine life and performance. Just as a tip, I would recommend downshifting to fifth or fourth, then flooring the accelerator to get good acceleration rather than just keeping it in sixth. That will also allow you to practice rev matching. Hope this helps

"Gear Shift Point Display" (gear figure + arrows in the right hand corner of the first line of the info display of the OBC) indicates the best gear to use for optimum economy. Part of the BMW EfficientDynamics Intelligent Energy Management System. To make GSPD appear/disappear: press the OBC button on the turn indicator lever for ± 3 seconds. Not on US spec.

Official info about "Gear Shift Indicator":

To me it rather seems a feature which is appropriate for a 118d than a 1M.

OK, that explains why I have never seen it. Fuel economy is not on my mind when I drive the 1M, It doesn't have to be since it gets better mileage in town and on the highway than anything else I own, which is truly sad considering how I drive it. There really is no reason not to drive this car every day!
