2012 135 dct random overheat?

2012 135i, DCT. 29k miles.

its happened 4 times in the last 3 weeks- took it to the dealer today so waiting to hear the final diagnosis but just wanted some other opinions.

So what happens is after driving about 30 minutes the engine temp is high warning comes on and literally about 5 SECONDS later the vehicle overheating warning comes on and goes into limp mode. Also important note- The temp gauge does NOT show any overheating, in fact the temp gauge stays about 230 ish

each time ive pulled off to the side of the road and turned the car off. the moment I turn the vehicle off on the display it shows "all systems check ok"

I can turn the vehicle back on immediately and its fine. drives no problem.

As im typing this the dealer just called and said its the water pump..... idk well see

Sounds right for water pump - the temp gauge in the dash is OIL temp and it won't react nearly as fast as water temp if the pump isn't moving water. You can use the hidden menu to access a water temp display.

well now I just feel like an idiot not thinking about that being the oil temp.

guess I need to play with the system to find the water temp.

either way they replaced the water pump and all seems to be well currently thankfully.

This is interesting. Is it something that can be "left on", i.e. can you see it on the bottom of the screen as you drive? How is it accessed?
