E82 N55 w/JB4 - can't pass DMV

Have the autoclear turned off, and Map 0, but monitors won't set to ready so I can get my emissions test. Burger customer service clammed up like I was a mystery shopper from the Feds and will not help at all. 🙄

No other mods. How do I get to ready?

You need to completely disconnect your JB4: all sensor hijack connections (don't forget the MAP sensor on top of the engine, that one is very stealthy), CANBUS wires, and 12v.

Clear all codes before disconnecting.

I've attached the emissions drive cycle guidelines for reference. The last segment is difficult: 15 minutes between 40 and 60 mph, do not go over 3000 rpm, DO NOT touch brake pedal. I found that using cruise control is OK for this part of the drive cycle. If you don't follow the drive cycle and just wait for everything to go to "Ready" by driving normally, you could end up waiting a couple of weeks.

GOOGLE BMW emissions drive cycle and try to do what it says. The last segment is difficult: 11 miles between 50 and 60 mph, not over 3000 rpm (I'm going from memory on this). Thanks for this. I'd guess most JB4 users have these on cars they actually drive on the street. Surprised I haven't seen more/can't find more about this issue. That puppy is coming off and not going back on.

The people at Burger do not reply to questions like yours because their equipment is for "off-road/track use" and that is because they have to walk a thin line with the government regulations. More specifically, a device that automatically erases fault codes related to emissions and engine controls is not looked upon with a smiling face.

In an effort to be 50 state compliant and in order to take a step away from that thin line, you'll find that the latest version of firmware does not auto clear codes. It is somewhat annoying to see the yellow light pop up randomly, making you wonder the degree of fault that triggered it.

Burger will discontinue support/availability of earlier versions of firmware in order to take an even bigger step away from the line. All will be forced to use "non-autoclearing" software.

BTW, I attached the Sensor Readiness document to my first post

Thank you. I get it in general, but I guess very blunt response that I received from them put me off. Thanks for all this info.

I felt the same way when I had my problems, too. I even posted on n54 that I'd be selling my JB4 after it was removed.

The problem is that they don't come out and say what I posted above. Again, I'm sure there are legal issues involved but something better than "you're SOL on your own" would go down a lot smoother.

In the end, I put the JB back in while I waited for MHD to be available for 2012+ cars. I haven't done the switch yet, but I'm thinking of MHD BEF w/JB4.

I did not have to disconnect my JB4 on my N55, just set it to map zero. Did the drive cycle first try. I didn't think it would set as several times I did have to brake & a couple times I was outside of the RPM tolerances.

This issue has been firmware dependant. When I had JB4 I had to take it completely out of my care because the emissions monitors WOULD NOT SET.

It's just a bug in Terry's software that comes and goes...

That makes sense. I bought mine mid 2015 and haven't ran an update.

I have an 08 N54 car with JB4. I do use the cat simulator, when going in for annual inspection I set the map to zero so the OBD can communicate with testing equipment. I generally just drive to the inspection station, pay my money and hold my breath, so far the machine spits out a valid sticker, I go back to Map 2 and all is good, sorry to hear of your woes.

Did you get this squared away? I had to use a DP (catted Wagner) fix on Map 0 to set the cat, but it can still throw the SES light if I floor it or come off the throttle from a high RPM. Usually says reaction too fast or delayed reaction. I have to baby it till emissions testing is over.

E82diff, remove the darn thing altogether

1) JB4 ISO has no pass through as per "I set it to 0". If you did not buy ISO or sweitch an older unit to ISO then setting to 0 will work. Otherwise, remove the thing.

2). As of firmware 5-15 there is no more auto clear for error codes. From that point on you are going to receive regular warnings on your dash. You can still clear the codes through JB4, though.

FULLY DISCONNECT JB4 as per the posts above

Removed the stupid thing and had PPK remotely flashed. Best move since I bought the car!
