"high-flow" drop in filters? better? or same?
anyone actually "feel" a difference with a aftermarket drop in filter vs the stock OEM paper filter?
just put my oem intake back on as the afe cai was a piece of crap/poor quality and has way less "flow" than stock...plus it sucks in hot air...dont buy it....haha can someone justify spending $60 on a k&n drop in or something like an active autowerks drop in?

Performance gains? No. I do notice slightly better mpg with a clean filter. I have a afe oiled filter. I clean it regularly.

im n55, so the dci is a no go.
i had idle issues with the open/non-sealed intakes, since the OEM intake went back on they have been cured...so for now i think im sticking with this until i can find a reasonable sealed intake with a larger box.

Sorry, I didnt take into account the intake design differences between the two motors.

You wont feel any performance gains with a drop in filter

I have the K&N drop-in and I like it.
I can't say that I can tell a performance difference, but it does seem to breathe easier, especially since my Dinan S2. For the N55, the consensus was that an open cone filter was actually detrimental to power gains with the Dinan S2. Also, increased flow as compared to paper filter does not necessarily equate to less filtration. I know it is counterintuitive, but that's just not the case. Anecdotal evidence: I am a helicopter pilot. When I went to the desert, we installed oil-impregnated inlet barrier filters on our helicopters (basically a K&N panel filter). Now I know I am talking about a helicopter and not a car, but our forced-induction turbine engines produce a lot more power and are far more sensitive to particle ingestion than a car engine (with the added bonus of much higher stakes in the event of engine failure). We were skeptical, but even when our filters were completely coated in desert dust to a point where they looked mud-caked and were about to activate emergency filter bypass, their flow rate was still better than the old swirl-tube centrifugal filtration system we had before. So call it apples and oranges if you like, but the better technology can overcome the intuitive "higher flow must equal less filtration". So take that for whatever you feel it's worth.

Plus, for $50-$60 bucks, why not?

^^ True. you can use it for years if you clean it properly. I've got a AFE Pro dry filter.
I clean it once a year.

I was not a big K&N fan based on using filter in my work vehicle (Nissan sentra) no mpg difference or performance gain
Put one in Friday night $58 from amazon and it seems to have done the trick cobb stage 2 aggressive tune was cold starting real bad and a couple times when really getting on throttle car would seem to hiccup Ran the car for a couple of trips with stage 1 tune and it was better Saturday I changed back to the stage 2 aggressive and what a difference! Could not believe it, there is no more hiccups and the rough idle at cold start is nearly gone I don't think I am going to become a K&N fanboy but the increased air flow that the car is getting is definitely making a difference I was getting ready to change my plugs out again but will be putting on hold for a couple of weeks to see if this stays true |
