I love that it does this to people. Quality, compromised cars tend to have a wider audience as they have general appeal and don't offend. They're not difficult to drive, they're not focussed, they do a bit of everything quite well.

Cars like the 1M are compromised, it's spiky, it's punchy and unruly, it's firm and direct, it's not a great cruising tool, and it's not great at getting from 0-100 in the fastest time possible.

It's honest about what it is, it's flawed, and it's superb. So I love that those who like it tend to love it, and those who don't tend to seriously dislike it. And I think the appearance has a similarly polarising effect on people.

It's a focussed machine, it's not a Focus.
