125i tuning options?

As soon as I heard that the 125i uses a detuned version of the 130i's engine, I got curious. So I started searching around and it seems hardly anyone does it! Although I did get one response from european autotech:

Quote:
Power goes from 160KW to76Kw and torque goes from 250nm to 274nm.
The cost is $2100.
Typos aside, it looks like only ~10% improvement in power and torque. Are there any better options? (Besides upgrading to a 135i of course!)

Hi Chylld,

This is my first post, as my car isn't due to arrive until Nov/Dec. But I have enjoyed reading posts from you and other locals while I wait.

I too have ordered a 125 i (of course in manual as that faster 0.6 secs 0-100 makes a huge difference!) and have spent a fair bit of time researching the remap and interceptor ECU options. While I haven't decided which way I will go yet, I thought you should check out powerchip as they offer the same improvements for less dollars. See below:

"Powerchip has a range of chips to suit your car, which can increase it's power to between 166 kW and 174 kW, and it's torque to between 280 Nm and 294 Nm.

The price of the Powerchip is AUD $1,690.00.

In order for us to give you specific power improvements and pricing information, please continue on to the next page. By providing your email address, we will email you a comprehensive ten page datasheet specific to your car."

There are also a number of threads to read in other forums.

Thanks for the tip, will look into it. Some interesting info on non-Australia-specific 1Addicts threads, e.g. here:

Quote:
I compared Euro speced cars 125i and 130i

So, 125i vs 130i

Equal intake
Equal camshafts
Equal ECU box with JUST DIFFERENT engine control softwareSwaping software is apparently not big issue and cracking codes is matter of software guys. Usually that elevates power (+50 HP) to 270-272 HP range alone (what is stock power of Euro 330i and X3 with same engines).

Real improvement after software swap (with AT gearbox) is quite obvious (0-100 km/h 6,0 s vs. 6,7 s with car I tested) and car runs better in all situations, so such mod is well worth efforts (should not cost too much either).
and here:

Quote:
125i and 130i and Euro X3 share 100% equal engine with only different ECU algorithm
325i was re-tuned here (after ECU algorithmn cracked) to 272HP initially and to full 280 HP later. Same I expect for my 125i.

1800 Eur (minus VAT) is IMO best spent money on tuning N52 up to 270-280HP.

Yes there are a few threads to sift through...

I will be interested to see what (and who) you decide to go with.
Certainly it is the key mod to look at.

In most NA cars it would be logical to start with intake and exhaust changes but you will definitely get more power for your money in re-tuning this detuned engine first.

If you have a bigger budget, then the other way to go would be fit all the other mods and then take it to a dynotuner with experience with BMW maps and the connections to break the ECU lock code.

Good luck.....

You are using quote figures between 125i and 130i.

Have anyone dyno both at the same time in Australia and see the ACTUAL difference?

It is always a dream to get NA tune. It is a lot of money for little power most of the time.

Did someone mention Powerchip? You've got to be kidding to use a Powerchip on a nice car like this! Stay away.

Can't agree more. They simply the cheapest tune material on earth. Most of the NA tune just manipulate the MAF (mass air flow sensor) and the later model car can self correct the difference over time.

Piece of shit. Waste of money.

It is just the same as a resister that sold on eBay.

Taka, you are way off the mark here, they do offer a flash tune for the 125i. I'm putting my hand up to try one out and i will be soon.

I will be keen to get your feedback on the tune Andrew.

I am not advocating the company but they do offer 2 or 3 levels of tune depending on the fuel octane level you specify...so can't be too basic.

While nothing can replace a dyno-tailored to your exact car it would have to give better numbers than the stock tune - which is clearly designed to justify the jump to a 135 specs.
(I mean if the 125 was giving the full 195KW who would spend $15K for 30KW?)

Oops I was thinking of Unichip but I prob think they should move on to ECU remapping.

Why are you doing so many flash tune Andrew? If they do a map for you to upload. Can you make one up and upload it yourself?

I have limited experience in tuning but what I have seen in the Japanese when they tune my RX-8 with their map. They do minor adjustments to their map to suit my car.

Very keen to hear of any developments in this space, Andrew... I'll even offer my car if you'd like a guinea pig

I had a car available for use when i needed it and now he is missing in action???? I have 5 or 6 maps available to try out and will dyno all of them, will actually load them while on the dyno. That is what the American market call live tuning, not my idea of live tuning. Anyhow the struggle i have with this is the gains, i mean for a NA car the gains are nothing for the dollars spent, it is just hard for me to come to terms with. Plus the functionality is an issue as there is no added value, like what else does it offer, (ie free updates when dealer over writes, user adjustability, what sort of business model is that?) The poster above stating the other software is interesting, not sure how accurate but worthy of looking in to. I'll email the car owner again tomorrow and if i get no response i'd be glad to take you up on that cozza, i'd just ask for some accurate data testing before in the real world with someone like Taka, who is great at doing that, then the same tests afterwards once i have chosen the best torque increase tune file to use. I want to do it right from the start, i have learnt from all the work i did on the 135i's when the data was incorrectly presented. So we have what we have, lets work out some answers to the long asked questions.
