How do you find which software version is installed? Is this a dealer only function?

If your enquiry refers to the ability to play MP3 CCDs (,,MP3 update`` is a little vague), this capability is included starting in October 2005 cars. New hardware was slipstreamed into E90s as of then to provide this capability.

Only the dealer can tell you.

The "service menu" only show one littlle parts software version, not the cars

Early reports from German 5 Series owners is that the new CIP 20 gives early nav cars MP3 capability.

We need to wait for it to spread across the world and for E90 owners to get it installed to verify the E90 also gets the MP3 upgrade for early nav cars.

It should be in most USA dealers early Jan 2006
