1M ESS Tuning - teaser

I just received my 1M tune from ESS Tuning today and used their Direct Flasher to download it. The process is very simple and easy to follow. A cool feature is that I can flash the car back to stock within minutes. This is a nice option to have before a dealer visit if needed!

I have the production version of their 1M tune and it has significantly increased the power, according to my butt dyno. The power in the 1M in low rpm is very strong right out of the box, but with this tune it is stepped up slightly and then the power really comes on strong at 3000 and above. It now keeps you pinned in the seat all the way to redline!!! The power delivery feels more linear towards redline and pulls hard and fast up the hills by my house.

It has only been installed for couple hours, so more review details to come and dyno numbers to come soon too!

Cool! So you tuned your own car and can detune it whenever you want to? Do you need special tools for it or can i anybody do this?

The tool comes with the tune. ESS and Cobb tuning both have devices that connect to the OBDII port, if I'm not mistaken.

I will definitely keep everyone posted. Yes, this is the best option IMO, as I don't do piggybacks.

Yes, this is a must have for the 1M as it takes to another level.

The ESS Direct Flasher comes as a package deal with your tune. Yes, you can download the stock file back to your car whenever you want and then download the tuned file again if you want. Basically, once you have loaded your stock and custom tuned files to your Direct Flasher unit you have the option to download any of the files at any time. It only takes about 15 minutes or so, but it is literally as simple as plugging in a flash drive and following very simple on-screen instructions.

I did a full write-up on my 135 tune from ESS here --> http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=478856

Again, more details to come shortly.

Yes, I am trying to get a dyno session scheduled and should have something very soon. This holiday weekend has delayed my dyno sessions.

Yes, it comes with a handheld Direct Flasher unit that plugs directly into the OBDII port when you want to download files to your car.

Similar as it plugs into the OBDII port and then you can upload/download files to and from the car. That is as much as I know as I have no experience with the Cobb AP.

I don't know about that. I don't want to lose the throttle response provided by the 'M' button.

One thing I did not like about the DINAN flash on my M3 was that you kept hearing how the dealership would accidentally re-flash and clear the software upgrade during routine services. This option gives you control over the flash rather than being at the mercy of the dealerships.

The throttle response provided by the 'M' button is retained and functions as normal, however you have MORE POWER now!!!

Yes, exactly the reason why the handheld unit is the best option IMO. I can flash the car back to stock whenever I want. I am in control, not the dealer.

As great as it all sounds, I will not be jumping on the tune bandwagon anytime soon with my 1M. Power doesn't appear to be an issue with the 1M. Also would like to see a bit more R&D before applying 3rd party software to my 50k BMW.

How is that possible if the OEM software is overwritten?

Totally understand where you are coming from. ESS Tuning has been around since 1995 and they completely R&D all their products before releasing it for sale to the public.

This page describes more about the ESS Tuning product goals before releasing it for sale.
http://www.esstuning.com/pages/About-us.html

Also, I have their ESS Supercharger on my 2009 E90 M3 and have had no issues since installed in October 2009!

It's all considered when ESS creates the tuned file for your car. The existing features of the stock car are maintained, example the "M" button. If you need more technical explanations then I'm sure ESS can directly answer your questions.

Yes true, the 1M is not lacking any power, but if the tune bumps the hp above 4k and keeps the curve strong till the 7k redline(rather than the stock hp profile that drops of at 6k), I'll be very interested!

According to the ESS website, they are located in AZ. Whose car do they have at their facility to test?

We have a facility in Norway also. 1M software development was done on a vehicle in Europe and final testing was done on a US spec car here before release.

Our new 1M software is rated at 400 HP. The vehicle retains 100% of its OEM functions with our tune and can be flashed back to stock via Direct Flash at anytime.

Nice!! This is very exciting. It seems like a lot of tuners are really trying to work their magic to release their remaps!

I'd really be interested to see the comparison between power delivery of stock and tuned.

Thanks for sharing!

Does this tune also works for the EU spec cars?
