Transmission Diagnosis?

I drive a 2008 e82 128i sport package AT, My problem is that when I pull the shifter into drive it will say D as it should but cannot be put into sport mode. The shifter will seat itself to the left when it is pulled into the M/S area as it is supposed to but still retains the D symbol regardless of input. It will not give me the M1 M2 M3 etc indicators when I push or pull the shifter as is usually the case even at idle. Do i just need the dealer to simply reset the software or what seems to be at fault?

Yes I know "should have gotten a 6MT." That ship has sailed, too bad. (and yes i know what i am missing out on)

Well that sounds like the answer, I drive it in "Manual" mode over 95% of the time it makes sense for those components to deteriorate. I am still under the extended 100k mile warranty will this be covered?

Give the dealer a call and i'm sure they'll be glad to help under warranty.

I had this exact problem. The dealer will replace the entire shifting assembly at a tune of 1300$. My local bmw independent wanted to do the same thing, but I convinced them to do the wire splicing. 2 hrs of labor was a much better deal. Although admittedly, the problem isn't solved.

Result: I don't DS very much anymore.

They ordered a new shifter assembly from Germany, just have to wait another week for the parts to come in. Thank GOD the warranty saved my ass on this, otherwise it really would have been trade in time.

The new shift assembly has the same problem as in the wires will splice over time, especially if you are a OCD D/DS driver.

Which means now is the time to get out of it while the repair is free.

Does this issue happen in DS mode when using the shifting function on the AT stick? Or it happens in DS mode, even then letter the car shift for you?

Any difference when using the paddles versus the stick for manually shifting the AT in DS mode?
