correction, the e46 coupe was introduced as a 323ci and 328ci in MY2001. Thus, if the pattern remained the same, this next coupe would still be introduced as the e92 325 and 330ci. Possibly meaning that the engines wouldn't be introduced until 2007. I can't wait that long.

But then again, this is probably some good marketing, since the body style may stale over its 6-7 year life, up the engine, make some minor changes to keep the model "fresh." Thus, it's all about timing as a market strategy.

- MY96 E36 was the 323 and 328. 4 cylinder is dead in the USA.
- MY99 E46 Introduced as 323 and 328
- MY01 E46 Coupe introduced, 323 replaced for 325, 328 replaced for 330.
- MY05 E90 Introduced as 325 and 330.
- MY07 E90 Coupe/E92 Introduced as 328 and 335

Am I the only person who sees the pattern here?

I've said it before, I will say it again- the 325 will be replaced with the 328 and the 330 will be replaced with the 335. That is the way BMW has worked since god drove a 2002tii.

I am glad to hear a rumor that BMW won't fall for this turbo charging shit either. Turbos are for companies that don't know how to build efficient motors in the first place OR for motors which have been rung as far as possible with natural aspiration. BMW can get 340 out of the M motors, they can damn well get 310 out of an advanced N series motor.

310 should shut those people at Lexus and Infiniti up...

Yeah, and the SMG was in the product guide as well and never materialized. I'm also very skeptical.

That's another thing....all of this technology coming together next year.
Its going to be hard for BMW to keep costs down, especially after a very poor 3rd Quarter in profits.

I have no problem with BMW releasing 328 and 335. But it would have been nice if they released these cars with the new body/design initially.

Yea, I forgot about that... 323/328CIs are sort of rare compared to the number of 325ci and 330ci cars out there.

Having said that, I don't think BMW is going to do that again. There is a horsepower war going on right now and BMW is, frankly, loosing. I think most enthuiasts couldn't care less, but the market wants to play on bragging rights- $40k+ sports sedans and coupes are beginning to require 300bhp to get into the club and it is quickly becoming the magic number.

Rightly or wrongly, BMW is the epitome of the sports sedan and it is increasingly harder to explain to people why the benchmark of the industry is down on horsepower compared to not one but two Japanese cars (the IS and the G35). Furthermore, Audi has been creeping the S4 downmarket from an M3 competetor (which it never did well at) and placing it against the 330. The RS4 will take on the M3.

This goes for everyone, if horsepower is your worry, then you are really missing the point.

I used to think that we could get the real scoop on these boards, but now I'm not so sure. There wasn't a single mention on here about the possibility of a September update that allowed the owner to set DRL, auto locking, etc. BMW managed to keep that a secret until long after the new cars were being sold.
That has convinced me that any "privileged" info we see here is only here because BMW wants us to see it.
For each of these rumors (335 is a turbo / 335 is a 3.5 NA / etc) I figure either some hooligan has made it up for kicks, or BMW has "released" it to float the idea to enthusiasts and gauge the reaction.
My guess - the existence and architecture of the 335 has not been finalized by BMW. They are watching our reactions right now to see which way the winds are blowing. Hey BMW - if you make a 335, make it really expensive so I don't wish I had waited another year to get one instead of my 330.

With all this talk about these new models has anyone considered how many trim levels of E90 there will be when the dust settles:

320d, 323i, 325i, 328i, 330i, 335i.

Doesn't that seem a little much?

The threads here are discussing the possibility of models being replaced like they did with the e46. No one is claiming they are keeping the old badges. So there wouldn't be six active 3 series badges. In the US there is currently 325 and 330. Some think this will change to 328 and 335 - still just two badges.

The e46 did this when it launched in '99 with the 323 and 328. In '01 they updated the e46 to 325 and 330.

Didn’t anyone take a writing class in college? Have we all forgotten about citing sources and verification when stating facts?

The problem about your position is that you have NO idea who I am... or more importantly, who I know and talk to. I am a BMW fanatic... the truest and deepest type of enthusiast. I seek out information because of my love for the brand. The coming changes are very exciting, and I'm saying that even though I don't completely agree with some of the things that will be coming. I'm actually pretty pissed that the Turbo won't be coming and hope like hell that they change their minds... again...
