Post 2013 BMW 1 Series (E82/E88) July Production Changes (All)

As of July production on select MY13 vehicles, we will introduce Option Harmonization – an initiative that will significantly reduce package and option complexity to help facilitate easier vehicle ordering and inventory management. Option Harmonization brings a wide-scale change to standard equipment, pricing, package content and stand-alone options that will put our vehicles in a strong competitive position.

All Models
Please note the following changes applying to all MY13 July production models:

The “snowflake” button for air conditioning will be changed to “A/C”
The “CD” button on the iDrive controller will be changed to “Media”
xDrive badge will be re-located from the front fender to the left side of the rear trunk lid for all Sedans, Coupes, and Convertibles.

1 Series Coupe and Convertible (E82/E88)

Standard Equipment
As of July 2012 production, all 1 Series Coupe and Convertibles will be equipped with Smokers package (441), which was de-contented in MY09. This option includes a conveniently located 12 V power outlet in front of the gear lever and a spring-loaded cover that is harmoniously integrated into the center console.

That extra outlet up front on my 2008 is awesome. I don't know how all you guys can even use a radar detector or external gps without it. Such a pain whenever I get a loaner. Good thing it's coming back.

I don't know, I much prefer having the open bin to the ashtray. Where do you put your wallet when you drive?

I try to fully charge my GPS before I ever need it (which isn't often, anyway) but if I have to plug it in the cord is long enough to reach the 12V plug under the armrest.

The outlet is to the right, leaving plenty of space for loose change, my wallet, my emergency inhaler, etc it even has a little door that I can close over it all (not when full, but to hide the change or my inhaler).

I just can't imagine having to drape the cord over your arm and where the shifter is. Seems like it gets in the way... But as long as it works for you that's awesome

I agree. I keep my sunglasses case in the bin. I also toss things like my phone, keys (I have Comfort Access), and other misc things in the bin while I'm driving. Hopefully the new bin with the 12 V in it will have room for my sunglasses case. I plan on trying to pick up a 2013 in a few months.

I use the bin in my 3 for my smartphone and shades -- it's the perfect space for them. I'd much rather have the well-located bin than the smoker's kit even though I forgo a handy 12V outlet.

I'm hoping the dealers will be able to swap these out without too much trouble. Anyone ever swapped a bin in place of the smoker's kit (terrible name, BTW)?

Yes, I did it a few months back - it takes some time -big learning curve - there is a DIY-just search- posted with the part number from a 3 series bin - so that you can keep the lid. Center console needs to come out - a few screws, bolts and clips. Go slow and tape up all the areas to avoid any damage. You also need to remove the plastic cover around the radio. If you have heated seats it is a bit more work to remove the cover plate. You use the carrier for the bin from the 1 and the actual bin from the 3 series - it works. The wire harness can be eliminated or you can opt to add lighting to the bin. It costs about $25 bucks for the parts

Holy crap -- thanks for the details, but that's more than I bargained for!

Alternate question: since I have to order another car anyhow to get a manual transmission in Southern California, is there a smoker's package delete option?

I agree with a lot of you guys about the 12 under the armrest ! My GPS cord is long and reaches it easy and not over my arm . I like the no ashtray as I am a non smoker and used to put change Ect. in my ashtray . Love the new tray ! Peace , Jim

To each their own... I have my 2013 135is and I love the cover and extra outlet. My wife has a 2012 128i and immediately complained about hers not having the cover. I keep my wallet in my pocket, sunglasses case in door pocket, comfort access key in pocket, phone in pocket (blue-tooth). I understand some people don't want stuff in their pockets when they drive but seriously I'm not emptying and stuffing my pockets every time I enter and exit my vehicle. I personally think it looks better IMHO.
