Oil Change This Weekend

I'm scheduled to have a break in oil change this weekend. Should I let the dealer pick which oil to put in or does anyone recommend a different kind of oil that I should buy myself?

BMW has their own branded oil, i forget which company makes it for them, but use that stuff. if you want to not use their oil, i recommend royal purple, it gives a few hp and torque because it makes the engine run cleaner and smoother, they have done dynos, you can look it up, i use it on my other 2 non BMW cars

I believe Castro makes the synthetic BMW oil. I wouldn't waste money on high-end oil unless you plan to do a track event.

BMW's approved synthetics

I attached what I think is BMW's current list of approved oils. Some people like Mobil 1 and their 0-40W is on the list and sometimes available at Walmart. $22 for a 5 quart would save some money. My Porsche driving friend is cautioning me of bad reports, however, of camshaft and other damage using this oil - I need to review the reports. It's hard for me to believe that Mobil 1 oil would hurt an engine.

I plan to just buy an oil change pack from United or Tischer in a few weeks and do it myself. I will let the dealer do the free maintenance but my other cars have never had anybody but me change the oil. If you want something done right....

Great! Thanks. I think I'll just go with the BMW oil since I won't be doing any track event.

Synthetics are rather beneficial outside of the track.

"High end" oil could mean different things to different people. I think the reference was to things like Royal Purple and Amisol and Red Line synthetic. The kind of oil that is around $10/qt. To some of us, any synthetic is pretty high end.

While I haven't shopped for oil in a couple of years, I found that Tischer's price for BMW branded Castrol synthetic 5w30 actually beat the local auto store's prices for Mobil 1 by 10~20%.

Tom,

I agree unless you can find the five quart at Walmart for $22. It's hard to beat $4.40/qt. Even if you just switch to 1 qt containers at Walmart, the cost is over $5/qt and the BMW oil option looks pretty good.

I looked at Tischer and United and couldn't decide which had the better deal so I just placed this order with United. Theirs was $47 without shipping, Tischer is $62 with. I am pretty close to United so I decided to take the chance it is less than $15 shipping. Even at $47, figuring $10 for the filter would come out to over $5/qt - not unreasonable but not cheaper than the 5 qt of Mobil 1 at Walmart. But it's good to stay with OEM products when the cost is similar and I didn't find the 0-40W Mobil 1 my last several visits to Walmart.

Jim, there seems to be a glitch on Tischer's parts website as they show the 1 series oil change kit for $62.00 but MSRP is listed as $53.10. So I think these figures are reversed.

Last year when I had them do a "break-in" change at 3,000 miles, they charged me $50.04 for 7 quarts of oil plus the filter, and $19.95 labor for a total (incl. shop supplies & tax) of $78.00 which included their usual excellent hand wash job.

Since they are the closest dealer to me, I have no idea of their shipping costs. But the basic idea is that there really seems to be no good reason not to use BMW synthetic - whether you are a DIY guy or just lazy like me!

I see that BMW recommends checking your oil every time you purchase fuel. So why is there no dipstick?

There are new oils designed to be run in direct injected cars.
The very high fuel pressures seem to break down regular oils.
I like running "designer oil".

The oil BMW uses/recommends is good enough....just let them change it, read a paper, relax.

There is no plastic tube with hash marks on it in the engine bay. Doesn't mean you cannot (and should not) check the oil level every time you get gas.

I second that... In my Blue Beast ( secret) I run only Royal Purple 10w-40.
At $10/ quart it's not cheap, but somethings are worth the money. For regular / spirited driving, dealer oil should not be a big issue though... if you track / drive hard like I do, "good enough" just isn't good enough ( and from personal experience Mobil 1 supersynth not what it's cracked up to be...)

Ive had good experience using Pennzoil synthetic on other vehicles..
Do you think a pennzoil 5w40 would be good for the 1?
I currently have 5w40 mobil1 synthetic in my car..

Also, winters get down to like -20 fahrenheit here. think 0w40 is good?

Just make sure they put the right kind of oil in your engine... (see http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=286618)
