6AT Sport / Manual Mode question

Hi Everyone,

Wondering for those with an auto 135i if it's normal that when in manual mode & the car comes to a stop & you don't downshift it will stop in 2nd gear (M2) & will then take off in 2nd gear at every stop / standstill?

If I want to take off from 1st in manual mode I have to paddle shift down every time I stop at the lights.

Thanks in adance

Yep that's normal! I guess it's so the owner doesn't get freaked out when they take off at the lights and don't realise the car will hold in M1 to redline then shift.

Its designed that way - for the people in colder climates to take off in 2nd gear say for ice or snow. After all... BMW believes that the driver SHOULD have control over things.

I love that it does this. I find it a quicker launch than with 1st gear as you can launch harder and it keeps traction better, much better for dragging off at the lights : )

I find that if I launch launch hard in 1st I either lose traction (With DSC off) or end up with the DSC light dancing hard and then you need to select 2nd so quickly that 1st ended up being a waste of time. If I feather the launch so as not to break traction or get the DSC light dancing I find that the revs still go up so quickly that I have to select 2nd before I even need it.

2nd gear launch ftw!

Thanks guys!

Just wanted to make sure, I've come from a Golf GTi DSG (nothing but problems with that transmission!), very different beasts but wanted to make sure the BMW was suppose to do that, there's definitely no issue with taking off in second 2nd with all that torque/power at hand.

Cheers
