Right out of the gates InsideLine goes for the jugular and lets the readers know their overall opinion of the car. "The 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe is a fantastically compelling machine. It is fast — faster in real-world terms than the M3 on most roads." And that is the basis for the rest of the article, which is filled with praise after praise.

Engine
Edmunds states what we know, the power doesn't match up to the M3, however the massive torque figure makes up for the difference giving the 1M more than enough straight line pull. Whats really notable is that in their drive they felt the power all the way up the RPM band to 7000, without getting any sense of power trailing off. So much so that they believe the car to be underrated in horsepower/torque figures as well as 0-60 times.

Suspension
Edmunds loves the changes made to the suspension and give a character separate from their long term 135i and is the piece that qualifies this car as an M car

Edmunds does have gripes with the car, especially the throttle response which still does not have the M3 sharpness. They also did not like the fact that because the tires can easily be broken loose by the sheer power of the car, DCT has to engage to often.

But this is just a synopsis of their review, make sure to head over to InsideLine and read the entire article by clicking on the source link below.

Sounds like we are going to have install some wider rear tires to get all that power to the ground.

"The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder unit mounted longitudinally up front is the same as that found in the Z4 sDrive35is, save for some fine-tuning of the inlet manifold and exhaust system to provide it with a more menacing aural character."

Overall I would say this is good review. They brought up some negatives too, which seem realistic, and explain them clearly too. So I don't think this is a biased review - though some of the 1M reviews appear to be biased

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!

I like the review. Very excited.

I don't like all the Mustang GT fanboys piling on every 1M review though.

I would still pick an M3 over 1M .

I think u will get more from your $$ with an M3. A special Engine not a TUNED version, The long wheel base chassis and over all NO BS from the dealer and the limited order allocation.

It's been said that the next M3 will also be a tuned N54. So you won't consider that special either?

Sorry but there is a limit on the n54 tt and cannot make over 400hp consistently without overheating and actually last over 50k miles. Its a fanboi engine for peeps who cant afford an m3
Hey, I'm just going off of what Scott26 (BMW insider) said. I'd rather have a proper ground up M engine in my car but we're living in different times.

all of this is speculation.....I think the only thing we can say with some certainty is that the 1M is certainly the curtain opener for a new generation of M cars that will shy away from the original Naturally aspirated engines....that is not to say we will lose the gusto and power, but rather achieve it through other means

Agreed.... I am still curious to see a dyno run... because I am convinced that the M engineers didn't just sit on their hands when it came to tuning the motor as an M motor.... I have every confidence that it has been worked on and it will provide more output than the same motor in a Z4is.

^ I'm getting mine in June and that will be the first thing I do. I'm very curious about this car's true numbers.

I believe that one of the M engineers hinted as much to MNavigator. It surprises me how many are convinced otherwise with absolutely nothing to substantiate it. You at least have driven the thing and have a right to some speculation. I look forward to the truth coming out, and am cautiously optimistic myself.
