I thought I should also post this here.... from another winter tire thread...

8j x 18 wheels, ET20 offset
BMW model 270M

Look up 270M wheels, page 12.

BMW AG sells two different (complete!)tire packages both on the same 270M wheel. The winter tire package is the same as offered for M3's.

My 1M is on the boat now and I should be taking delivery next week. My original plan was to do 18" wheels and snows for winter but since I may be moving to warmer climates in February I don't really want to buy new wheels and tires just to drive the car for a few months and then never use them again.

Considering my situation would it be crazy to keep the stock 19" wheels and do snow tires on them? I was thinking Nokian Hakkapeliittas. I dont plan on venturing out in a snowstorm with the 1M, ever but having snows on it will give me peace of mind if I am out somewhere and the weather changes I'd like to be able to drive home safely.

So would the stock 19's on nokian hakkapeliittas be an okay alternative to a full snow setup if I am driving locally and never in heavy snow?

Cossac,

looks really good. I already got a set of 260M and shopping for tires now, the choice is really limited as of this moment, I am most likely go with Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero Serie II Tires which is the only choice left on tire rack...

Anyone can recommend a good source with reasonable prices and wider selection?

Maybe I would have to go with 245/40/18 fronts and 255/40/18 rears, I am aware it's not optimal, but do you guys think I will have issues with the setup?

thanks.

I have had winter tires since 1990 and it is best to go as narrow as you can. i live in Buffalo,NY. We have ice, deep snow and salty slush. I have 235/45/18 perelli sotozeroe square setup on 8.5 rims. These are left over from my e46 m3. For many years I used Nokia Wrs but they were no fun. We often have clear roads between storms and I hated them on dry pavement. I really enjoyed the Perellis last winter. I used variations of them until about 8 years ago when a friend got me a good deal on the Nokias. BMW recommends 235s so that's what I went with. I used 15mm spacers on all fours.

My main problem will to control my lead foot.
I'll try and take pictures tomorrow and post them.

So for those who want a square setup with a little more grip for mild winters, are there any problems with running 245/40/18 all around? Thanks

Has anyone been able to successfully fit all 4 of the stock 19" rims in their car when they have changed over to winter rubber?

I don't know that it is dimensionally possible or not.

Yes, easily. Fit them upright on back seat.

Moving Blanket to protect the trim and leather? Or just the plastic Bags and the tires inside of them?

I put mine in tire totes, but plastic bags would be fine.

Last question on this topic of storing the tires in the vehicle. Do you think that you would be able to fit the 4-tires standing up with the seats folded down, ie on a moving blanket?

I've had two in the trunk area and two on the back of the folded seats, it's tight but can be done.
