Passport 8500 hardwire help
Hey all,
My car is 6 weeks old and just beyond the break-in mileage Now time for some fun. Does anyone have their 8500 hardwired using the SmartCord? I cannot find a suitable location for it. Any ideas? Thanks, miiipilot

I have my 8500 mounted just to the right of the rear view mirror under the tint band. I had to purchase the extended "flat type" smart cord as I was not able to use the telephone style smart cord that was originally supplied. I find the detector still does a good job with laser but do question the effectiveness of the rear detection with it being mounted up as high as it is. Mounting at this point has worked well for laser detection in traffic and for off axis protection. I may of lessened its effectiveness for K and KA band but similar to your challenge, I had to find somewhere to put the unit. With that said; I have had enough notice with KA band on the highway etc. The passenger visor can still be used but will not come down all the way. Make sure the suction cups are in good order if you decide to go this route.

plus I think he was talking about the smaller mute button and where to mount that. Mine is right on the steering column but it does obstruct the view of the odometer a little bit however at night I get a nice heads up display like reflection so when it goes to red and flashes I don't need to look down to notice it. I can go on no sound if I want to like this but rarely do. I thought of remounting it under the little lip of the front facing center piece near the HVAC, that bottom left corner could make for a nice stealthy location. If you're talking about the actual unit then just mount it under the rear view mirror like everyone else. You can tap into the power for the sunroof from there. |

Thanks for the responses. I do not have Navi. But have the flat hard-wire Smart-Cord.
I was referring to the smart-cord mute button thing lol. My last has had a knockout space that fit nicely inside. I wanted to see where other have placed that part...Stealthy would be nice, but within reach for the mute function. Thanks, miiipilot

mineo,
That's a great idea, never thought of even looking there. I'm gonna have to look into that. Thanks, miiipilot

I mounted mine on top of the rear view mirror closest to the driver's side using Velcro tape. I like Mineo's idea better. But mine was quicker at the time.

Hey hey miipilot, have you installed your 8500 yet? If you have, excellent, enjoy. If you haven't, I have a good way to mount the cord and detector. I'd be happy to snap a few pics if you'd like.

Here's the pacement of the remote button, just behind the front cup holder. Easy for the driver to hit, but a bit of a reach for a co-pilot.
The smart cord plugs into an add-acircuit in the fuse box, can't recall which slot, maybe 8? I then fed the cord towards the panel to the right of the passenger footwell, there's a rubber "thingy" between 2 trim pieces, I slipped it thru there. Then up the door frame to where you see here. then along the windshield glass to the detector. Shot from passenger side of the remote. And here is the trim piece that the cord goes up to get to the dashboard. If you need pics of the trim pieces where I slipped the cord thru hit me up.

Yeah man that would be distracting if you were to run the wire all the up the windshield to the rear view mirror. That's the reason i mount the detector low. Had no issues with reception. Laser is fine too down there.
