Rerouting the headlight washers to the intercooler?

I effing hate when i just need a wee bit of windshield wiper fluid spray to clean a bird dropping on the windshield, and next thing you know, the bloody headlight washers start a giser show like the Bellagio in Vegas! Has anyone rerouted the headlight washers to feed cool water to the intercooler like on the Subaru STi?

I think there's enough flow to soak the entire front face of the intercooler. Combine that at speed with air and you should have a cooling effect...

Agreed, but cooling the intercooler with water on a hot day will also contribute to reduced heat soak... Simple science.

I'm with you. I hate the headlight washer. I've inquired at BMW if there is a way to defeat that feature and they don't know of one. Good luck rerouting the spray. I guess you could alway pinch off the hose leading to the washer jet.

Rerouting the fluid is a lot better than randomly having it shoot up at your headlights. Why not reroute it even if it's only a 3 second gain? at least its something and it's not dirtying up your clean car.

The headlight washers won't activate unless the headlights are on at the time you try cleaning the windshield.

If you leave your headlights on auto, try turning them to the off position before activating the windshield washer. Or so I've read here anyway...

Sheer genius! Would be cool to try to single the headlights washers out, so they only spray the intercooler, and not the windshield.

I had an 06 STi, and the water spray only shot for a few seconds. That's all you need. The idea is to wet the surface. Once wet, the effect of the wind with the water has a cooling effect.

If you do it make sure you end up using more water then methanol becuase the methonal will eat away at your intercooler over time.

So if you were to do the reroute, everytime u wanna spray the intercooler u have to wash your windshield also?

POOR MAN'S INTERCOOLER SPRAYER.
Remove the bumper cover. Cut two small .850" x .430" (some minor filing trimming to fit the new nozzles) in your lower lip of the bumper right in front of your intercooler. MAKE THE HOLES SLIGHTLY SMALLER AT FIRST YOU CAN ALWAYS TRIM LATER. Install 2 E82 windshield washer nozzles (61-66-7-135-412), attach 1 elbow (61-66-8-374-371) to the left nozzle, connect 27cm of vacuum hose (61-66-8-262-762) to the elbow, attach a "t" fitting (61-66-8-374-372) to the right nozzle and connect the 27cm of vacuum hose to the left end of the "t", attach a suitable length of the same type of hose with enough length to allow you to remove and install the bumper but not get the hose kinked or jammed behind something to the right side of the "t" and run it up to the connector for the headlight washer hose on the right side near the turn signal, I'm pretty sure I used this part to attach the vacuum hose and the headlight washer hose with connection piece (61-66-8-360-181) IF not, I'm sure ytou can find something at your local Crappy American parts store. Now you should have it completely plumbed.
Find the ETM page for the headlight washer pump relay and disconnect the ground or control side wire from the JBE, this activates the pump, connect your own wires with a switch to ground, and mount it anywhere. The cigarette lighter socket is an open circuit until you push down on the lighter insert, completes the circuit. Rewire the backside of the socket, 1 wire to the JBE, the other to a suitable ground the ground wire for the socket works nice and doesn't require cutting.
With a little common sense and elbow grease you too can have your own functional, omewhat effective, but it doesn't matter cuz' its cool, poor man's intercooler sprayer.
Push the lighter, spray the intercooler. just a thought

Maxnix, the 5 gallon tank is your a@$. Its fairly obvious that, regardless of how effective YOU think the setup maybe, there are still people who still want to do the mod. So if you can't add anything positive you should keep your mouth shut ;-)
