Posted some of this elsewhere with a question, but just saw this thread and thought I would toss in my information.
2012 135i DCT M Sport. I am the 2nd owner. Bought 9 months ago with 87K miles. Now have 95K. No warranty of course. Prior records I could find indicated normal maintenance OK and nothing exceptional. I have had the pleasure of replacing a failed water pump, expansion tank, and chargepipe (went with aftermarket CP). Also repaired the oil filter housing leak (including new drive belt). Did VANOS recall repair. I also swapped out the ballast and adaptive headlight repair box on the driver side. Now my passenger side light is foggy and I'm getting morning light. Super frustrated with that. I did the work myself to save $1000 in labor. |

Found out a few weeks ago that i had a cracked engine mount. While replacing those for 335is mounts i decided to do some other maintenance - oil pan gasket, turbos, and steering universal. Finishing it off with a transmission flush and a walnut blasting.

Just over 150K miles. Replaced oil sensor, it has been throwing codes for a while. Cleaned VANOS solenoids, intake side threw a code once. Swapped it with the exhaust and see if it comes back and moves. Maintenance wise, engine, tranny and differential oil changes; air filters; spark plugs; and the breather valve to the valve cover. (I can't remember what it is actually called). I still have the PS, brake and AF fluids to replace.

2011 135i N55 DCT
Had the car for about 2 years now, 2nd owner, no past issues prior, as per BMW. Here's what I did so far: 1- VANOS (recall) at about 65K. 2- Water pump failed / thermostat changed at 90k 3- Starter failed - Replaced at 100K 4- Oil pan gasket replaced due to leak (and all other gaskets) at 100k 5- Replaced tensioner (making noise) at 100k. All in all, reliable. These are things that would need to be changed at this type of mileage.

Well my cars both '09 135i coupes. Both under the 35k mark. One I am original owner, second bought only 27k miles on the clock. I have great faith in these cars, However perhaps after reading this forum a sticky should be put together from some of you long time drivers. With a list of "common" ailment items to certainly watch/be aware of. Also put together not as a "fear these" failures because COME ON... IMO every car from every manufacturer has "quirks" or odd failures that despite the best attempts just could not be engineered out or perhaps unfortunate budget cuts. This particular thread has reassured me that I will enjoy my ferocious little DD's for years to come! And if perhaps I do run into these issues it will be with fore knowledge and understanding and not a complete WTF. Prevention is also a huge part of this, so knowing the weakness of certain parts to me is immensely valuable and I thank everyone for their inputs!

@Pkaia524 hey mind posting pictures of your front bumper and right behind the front tires so I can see how the car has held up after ~200k miles??

Bought my '08 135i with 81K miles. Very clean car, but no books or records. Carfax was good, showed regular maintenance at two BMW dealers in AZ. A couple convertible top problems (with elec. check), leak detection pump (fuel) replacement at 26K. It clearly had a recent brake job, but the tires are replacements (Hankook) and will need to be replaced soon. I had all the fluids, incl trans and rear diff changed as a precaution.
It's not a daily driver, but I've put 7K miles on it in 8 months with only one instance where the turbos were shut down and a VANOS code came up. I replaced the VANOS solenoids (only needed one but I did both) and I've had no further problems. I've replaced the spark plugs (not needed, old one's looked good). Just replaced my shocks and all mounts and isolators, which were clearly original to the car and needed replacement... front two shocks were totally without resistance or rebound. Also dropped-in a SSTT (Split-Second Turbo Tuner) I bought off ebay for $35... I'm super happy with that!! (yeah I know, "should have gotten a JB4; Cobb; Dinan, etc.", but I'm not racing or doing anything more performance-wise (unless I HAVE to replace my turbos... Then I'll do some upgrades) so $35 for 40-50 more HP? It's the single greatest performance value I've ever bought! I know I will need to do sometime in the future: Valve cover gasket (saw a little oil in two cylinder wells when changing plugs), oil filter housing gasket. The water pump, of course worries me... though I have no noticeable issues, I don't want to be stranded somewhere, but the replacement cost, even doing it myself, is so much I can't see replacing it preemptively. Likewise Walnut blasting. My car runs fine, but I doubt it has ever had this done. Funny, I'm less concerned about the turbos... If (when?) they go, I won't have a problem dropping a couple $K on them and getting that done, but spending $500+ dollars to clean the intake or replace a water pump (myself) kills me (as does hundreds of dollars in labor to replace a $20 valve cover gasket) Last edited by Seaice; 06-16-2016 at 11:26 AM.. |

2012 N55 135i. Just turned over 100,000 miles and paid the car off. Half engine light comes on and car stalls literally one block from the bank as I'm headed to drop off the check. Mechanic says High-pressure fuel pump. So excited.

2009 N54, 92K miles:
HPFP (recall, no issue before replacing) Seat belt tensioner (recall) Water pump/thermostat (failed) O2 sensor (replaced, but didn't fix code) 3 AC evaporators (go about every 2 years) MLSD (upgrade) PPK1 (upgrade) Brakes and rotors (once) Rear wheel bearing (failed) Light switch on dash (failed) headlamp bulb (one) Coolant flush and replace Auto Tran fluid flush and replace 1 battery replace Front wheel bushings (failing, this one just this week) Waiting on airbag replace (recall) Just getting my 5th set of tires. Have the waste-gate rattle, but not going to replace the turbos unless I have to. It's getting expensive. But nothing I didn't expect. Last edited by TMR013; 06-19-2016 at 10:33 AM.. |
