Squeaking brakes
I know this has been discussed a lot........my brakes are squeaking pretty badly now. I'm trying to hold off from yet ANOTHER trip to the dealer.
Many people have recommended "bedding" the brakes by performing several 60-0 stops. My question: Has anyone found that this actually works to stop the squeaking on the 1er? It sounds like it would make sense on new pads, but these had about 3K miles on them when they started. It's a pain to keep going back to the dealer, wanted to see if this was something that I could do to fix them prior to scheduling another appointment.

I don't know how effective bedding the brakes is, but one of my friends had the same problem with the brakes on his 135i and took it to the dealer. The dealer replaced the brake pads and the brake pad wear sensor-- the squeal went away after that.

To answer your question, I have found that bedding the brakes does work, at least temporarily. In my experience it normally stays quite for 500-1000 miles (and it seems to occur more when the weather is cold...no idea why). My understanding is that over time the brake rotors/brake pads get small, narrow grooves in them that cause the brakes to squeal when the grooves do not line up perfectly. Bedding the brakes (again, just my understanding) gets rid of the grooves so that the brakes don't squeal anymore.

I found that a high speed tour through a local canyon road heated up the breaks nicely to take off the glazing that seems to cause the squealing. However, the squealing was back pretty darn fast. I might mention to my dealer next time around, but I'm not sure it will help.
Also, I don't think it's really called "bedding". I think that's the process when you put a new set of pads on and get them heated up. I could be wrong but this is more like clearing glaze from light braking caused often by stop n go traffic.

This is what they did with mine as well, hopefully that does the job. They told me it was the sensor that was making the noise.
