BMW Performance Exhaust

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if I should invest in the performance exhaust or not. It's going to cost me 1200 dollars and I'm planning on keeping the car for another 3 years at most. Is it really worth that much money?

Thanks.

From what I've seen it's all about the sound preference. I haven't seen anybody say if one muffler actually gives more power than the other but the BMW PE only gives an advertised 5HP. I have it on mine, it sounds good but definitely didn't make any noticeable difference other than the noise. I'm actually debating on selling mine and going with something a little quieter when I do down and mid pipes. But in all fairness I stopped caring about loud exhausts when I stopped driving Civics.

The BMW PE for the 128i only costs around $700. I've got one on mine and it looks and sounds great. Don't know where you're getting the $1200 cost from, unless that's what it costs for the 135i.

That's the price my dealership (in ON, Canada) quoted me.

PE was my first mod out of the dealer. amazing sound! lots of burbles and pops with a deep tone.

I just got the BMW PE installed on my 135i and I love it. It really blew me away. I'd recommend trying one used on the forums. Either way you won't regret it.

Had mine a couple of weeks now and very happy with the sound. Paid less through this site...Reeves BMW in the classified section. Maybe the $1200 includes install which might make a bit more sense.

Anyways, when I'm cruising I forget I have it, but when I'm driving a bit more spirited, it sounds great. Never obtrusive. and just as important to me, so far no rattles, clunks or other signs of a poor fit. I've hit some nice potholes, dips etc expecting to hear something but nope, it's quiet.

A big chunk of change for something just for the ears, but hey, I smile every time I fire it up in my underground garage at work or redlining it getting on the freeway. And that's worth something.

Not when you consider that the install takes 30 minutes at most and involves cutting the original pipe just ahead of the muffler and removing it, slipping the clamp over the pipe and neck of the new muffler, hanging it from the original mount points and tightening the clamp. That's not a $500 install in my book. I did it myself in my driveway. $1200 may be what a 135i version costs with install, as it includes more than just the muffler and takes longer to install.

I have the original exhaust from my 135 sitting in my basement. It has 4 original miles of use. I think that it is pretty much what the 128i PE is. You may have to play a little to make it fit, but let me know if you are interested. It will be a lot cheaper than $1200...

It even has the black tip overlays that come in the 135i.

Ive never seen a gutted PE exhaust or a cross section of any e82 exhaust for that matter. But based on sound alone and the 135 exhaust is no PE exhaust.

I see the OP has a 128i, and it may very well be easier. My install though not technically difficult was time consuming and not a 1/2 hour job. Cutting two mid-pipes etc and getting things aligned was no easy task.

It's definitely easier on a 128i...there's only 1 pipe, and no mid-pipes, etc. Hardest part was measuring and actually sawing through the pipe at the right spot; the rest was relatively simple. There's a good DIY for this at
