New intake void warranty?
Hey guys I want to fit an aFe intake kit to my now fully stock 135i and I was wondering if bmw sees it fitted could they take away the warranty? I know they can for a chip but what about something like an air intake? and is AFE good? I'm talking about the stage 2 dual cone pro dry s intake kit? Would I need any other mods for it or is it fine for my stock 135i? I'm a new at any forms of mods so go easy on me. Thanks in advance guys!!

If they can prove that your intake caused a problem in the future, sure they can and usually will cancel that part of your warranty.
e.g. if your turbo compressor blades get eaten away by sand and debris, then they could surmise that the aftermarket intake and filters allowed more fine debris past the filter and therefore ate away at the blades. On the other hand, if your water pump goes, then they can't easily prove that your intake caused the water pump to go. There is a sticky somewhere on here about the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. That shows you what rights are yours, and what right are theirs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuso...s_Warranty_Act Edit: Just realized you're not in the US, the Above link won't help outside the US. Sorry about that. You may want to look into the consumer-right laws in your country.

Most US dealerships won't care about intakes. The intake really won't cause any problem unless it's constructed so poorly it lets water or particulate matter in. I never take my intake out when I go for service. Something like a tune which could hurt an engine, or downpipes which make you emissions-illegal, or headlight mods that can allow moisture into the light and break it would be something a dealership tends to care about. Outside the US, I don't know the specific laws, but I imagine things to be mostly the same. An intake is a relatively benign mod, and will not really cause any issues with the car, so a dealership should be okay with it. I can't speak for every dealership though, there are always jerks out there.

You shouldn't have a problem with an intake. They care about tunes, not bolt-ons. However, like others have said, it depends on the dealership. We have a Dinan certified dealership in St. Louis that actually welcomes aftermarket parts. I have a charge pipe, intake, downpipe, midpipe, axleback... and they didn't even raise an eyebrow.

With everything else stock, you will likely lose some response and a bit of power in the lower RPMs, but will gain some power in the higher RPM range. Also, it will sound a lot better. Intakes really work best with tunes, when the engine requires more air. Otherwise you're sucking in hotter air and the extra heat outweighs the benefit of the increased airflow at lower RPM ranges. However, I have the AFE intake and I love it. It sounds great, looks great, and I have never gotten any trouble from my dealership about it.

Bottom line is what do you really want. If it's performance, then go with JB4 and a DCI which is a good reason to worry about warranty. But if it's just the sound that your after and aesthetics on the engine bay, then you can go with the AFE. Again, just my $0.01.
