Looks like FDOT Road Rangers work well and you seem to be doing well. Quick responce time. If your wanna know the formula, hydroplaning speed (knots) equals 9 times the square root of tire inflation pressure (psi).
1 knot = 1.15mph |

sorry to hear about your crash. remember freeways are curved (i.e. middle lanes are slightly higher than the most left and right lanes) to drain rain water. in a heavy downpour, avoid outer lanes cuz that's where water accumulates.

Glad your'e ok mate!
You wont be the first or the last to do that, but it does make you think about road surfaces and driving in the wet a lot more when somethink like that happens! I let my friend drive my new celica gt 3 years ago, to drive home in. It was wet, but then a sudden hailstorm came down and he lost total control of the car, hit the hard shoulder between 50 to 70mph and parked it neatly facing the wrong way on the side of the road. We missed every other vehicle on the road!!! We were both ok, the car was a write off. One think we both learned from that, when its wet, slow the hell down. Im lucky if I go over 60mph now in the wet, its just not worth it. You are lucky you were in a BMW, not a small hatchback. Things could have been a lot worse. Check these pics out, notice how a lot of the BMW's fair well in terms of cabin structure. www.wreckedexotics.com |

That looks scary. Glad u r OK. hard lesson but I think it is a good lesson in that u got away no harm and hopefully the other folks you hit are all OK as well. I noticed the speed limit sign 55MPH is broken on the side of the road. Did your crashed caused the sign to fall the the ground too.

Did you use cruise control at the time ? Just want to share this with everyone, never use cruise control in a rain. The computer does not know when your car is hydroplan so it sent more speed to the wheel to get back to the speed that you set. Be safe. |

Glad you're OK, dude
Wow, brings back nasty memories for me, too. My worst experience with hydroplaning was as a passenger. The driver, also 17, started to drift toward an inside lane. We were probably going 55 or so. He cut the wheel sharply away and we found ourselves in a ditch on I-79. I agree with all other posts...ease off the gas w/ hydroplaning, don't jam on brakes, be willing to steer in direction of the slide. (It's actually natural to do this, because the front swings opposite and you'll feel like correcting it). Most importantly, slow down in the rain.
I have noticed, unfortunately, that sometimes everyone else is going too goshdarn fast, and that people seem to have a poor understanding of what constitutes "safe following distance". These practices sometimes lull other drivers into feeling like they can go faster than they should. Get fixed up, and enjoy your car. As Tony Soprano says " from here on, every day is a gift". |

I've hydroplaned in a FWD car before, and since all the power is in the front, it's pretty easy to pull out of a slide. But what's the best practice in a RWD car.?
