Thumbs down Need advice....Squeaking rear suspension

Guys,

I need some fresh opinions as I have really run out of things to look. I plan to take the day off and plan on disassembling my suspension (Left rear) tomorrow and look at all my bushings and e-brake.

It is soooooooooooo f*&^%$$#g frustrating and it is decently loud. I will do a vid when I take my daughter to the bus stop and post it. Let me know what you think. The above link is on the susp/brakes subforum and as you can see....

Any help would really be appreciated.

Here's the quick video I did with the camera. I had to pick up the pace at the end 'cause another car was coming behind. But you should be able to hear the squeaks.

geometry calculus?

mine squeaks too but only when I flop my butt in and out (sounds more like the ebrake pads).

1. Subframe bushings?
2. control arm bushings? {wd40 nope it's hydrophobic=dry rot in the long run, next time use something like Wurth Preservative or 303) start from there and hit each bushing with this stuff eliminate one component at a time. You may need more than one application to make sure the non-silicone (non-petroleum) based lubricant works into each item. I use Wurth on my 20+ year old E30.
3. Check inside the trunk & battery compartment, loose wires?
4. Squeaky fold down rear seat hinge?

Are you carrying extra weight in the back or did you adjust the camber or caster of the rear? Using non standard offset and sized wheels will slightly change the suspension geometry.

I added the powerflex inserts for the sub bushings a while back but those were greased up really good to make sure no noise showed up. Haven't adjusted any camber/caster in the rear either. I'm currently running winters (BMW recommended setup) right now.

I'm gonna be looking at everything tomorrow to include the ebrake. Right now, i've isolated it to the left side rear.

Hmmm could be the subframes. That's my best bet. Directly connected to the body transmitting sound into the cabin instead of isolating it. I am not sure if you can apply more lubricant there as they not easy to install to my best understanding.

track cars with non OEM bushings and other goodies may handle like the dickens but the brakes will squeal & the suspension will creak eventually.

Exhaust sounds great...

Clearly heard the sound...it has to be annoying.

Sounds like you may have it licked.

Ok,

After a bit of lookings and searchings, I still have the squeaking......BUT.....at a very VERY reduced rate.

I might have to get back in again and use a bit more copper grease on all the upper arms where they bolt to the hub and also on the lower shock mount. I might also be removing the powerflex inserts to see what happens there since they do create a gap on the mounting aspect of the subframe. If the sound is fully cured doing that, then I will go with the M3 bushings and sell away my inserts. I'm not saying that they (inserts) are the culprits but I have to check all the blocks and am very happy with them. For the price and benefits of a tighter rear subframe, they are a great choice.

Now the funny thing.......I decided to install my summers for a bit since it was gorgeous out today adn decided to test and see the results. Not a squeak whatsoever. nada, zip nothing!!!! Driving slow or fast.

When I put my winters back on.....after about 30 minutes of driving I started to hear it again but very subdued and barely noticeable which is a positive thing. The brakes went well thanks to the advice and instructions of mikeedler

I will have another update tomorrow and let you know how it went. Thanks to all!!

I've noticed my car is doing the same thing now. It just started and makes the car sound cheap.

And once again, the squeaking rears its ugly head. Luckily it's not that bad, but still noticeable. 18's are on. Next plan of attack is to remove the bushing inserts and see if it makes a difference.

At least removing them won't be as bad as installing them. Will keep all updated

Well, inserts are out and the first thing I noticed was the vibration in the rear subframe at speed was gone. So they are staing off permanently and will be upgrading to M3 bushings soon.

The squeaking is still there but only when I go over decent sized bumps and during the same speeds (15-35 mph) I need to get it to a drive on lift and have someone up top pushing down to see where it is.

I bet once the bushings are replaced the squeak goes away completely. Who knows how the inserts changed the original subframe bushings.

I think the reason for the hollow bushings is.

1. reduced noise transfer.
2. soften ride quality due to the use of run on flat tires.

Okay......final update,

IT'S GONE!!!!!!!!!!!

The culprit wound up being the lower control arm bushings which the shop that did the work told me were a bitch to remove since they had some rusting on them. Drove it around for a while and no squeaks whatsoever. I'm gonna save up some cash to get the pass. side done soon and that way I have peace of mind.

next up........M3 subframe bushings
